    anyone know if an aftermarket backlit keyboard will work if my machine didn't come with one ??

    Yes AFAIK all the E series for E_X00 and E_X10 should be interchangeable. Not sure about newest E6420/E6520.

    it is actually the e5240 .... it is the only option that isn't factory installed but i know i can get a backlit piece

    ...... i will get it, hopefully if i install it and plug'er'in, it'll light up ...

    I think you might be able to use E6520 FRU keyboard..
