It's hard to find scores between desktop/laptop.

Which chip would render a 3d scene faster? ie a cinebench score?

I don't know for sure...but I would be willing to bet the Core 2 would beat the 3800+ by a hair or be equivalent. I'm assuming that the 3800+ would be equivalent to a P4 HT 3.8GHz, which according to this thread the P4 3.8 is equivalent to a 2.0GHz Core Duo. The 2GHz Core 2 is slightly faster than the 2GHz Core, so I'm guessing the T7200 would beat the 3800+ by a little bit.

i think the AMD Athlon just because it is a desktop chip...

if any chip beats the other it will not be by much...

In a 64 bit environment the athlon will win by a pretty decent margin. But in 32 bit the Core2 will win.

The AMD64 instruction sets have always been better than Intels. AMDs have also been better gamers, so the X2 would win in that, but the CDs are excelent at multitasking in working environments, so it would win there.
