I dont know why but Im starting to get persuaded to get desktops vs laptops! does anybody else get this?
reasons for desktops
- components are better built
- components are better
- components are changeable
- duel screens/triple available
- no screen size limits
- 1080p+
- will last longer
- kited out with led's see inside
- better keyboard
reasons for laptops
- portable
- quick and easy to use
- lye on couch, bed, floor, ect
- small
- no wires
anybody have any thought on this?
-
-
portability is the main issue i believe. if you want/need poratability, the laptop is the choice. if its not an issue a desktop wins hands down.
-
www.notebookreview.com. You're at the wrong place to ask that question.
-
If you HAD to choose!! i know alot of people on here have both a desktop and a laptop!!
-
Well, it's like asking if you prefer a sports car or a truck. They serve different purposes.
Who do you love more? Your son or your daughter? -
I choose desktops because it's just overall better except for things such as portability.
By the way, in the context you're using, "dual" is the correct spelling. (sorry im just oc about some things.) -
you can get a laptop at a bit over 1K and you can do most things a desktop can do, the bad thing about desktop is its a huge ass chunk and takes up too much spacce. if it was me i would prefer a laptop, preferably 15" -17" will do to act like a desktop replacement

Really of the list only two a major features or barriers. -
Well, I can use a laptop for everything I would use a desktop for, but I can't do everything with a desktop that I can with a laptop.
-

I voted notebook.
I HAVE to own a notebook. I can't live without a computer.
I nevertheless own a desktop as an additional "luxury", and in fact use it more than the notebook. -
reasons for desktops
components are better built= If you mean heavier sure
components are better
components are changeable
duel screens/triple available= and you can't do with a notebook?
no screen size limits= and w/external monitor which I might mention is all desktop have is not an issue.
1080p+= They make notebooks that will do.
will last longer=with the advances in technology do you really want them lasting any longer?
kited out with led's see inside
better keyboard=And you can't buy an external keyboard for a notebook because?
reasons for laptops
portable
quick and easy to use
lye on couch, bed, floor, ect
small
no wires
So looks to me like reasons for desktop are
components are better
components are changeable
kited out with led's see inside
Oh and cost less.
I'll keep my notebook. -
I built my own desktop few months ago and I got my laptop last week. I haven't been on my desktop ever since because the laptop is much more portable.
My vote goes to the laptop for portability and space saving! -
no, can you elaborate. but i know for certain that you can get better HD's and better GPU's in your average desktop than you can in an average laptop
that kind of removes the main advantage of a laptop then. -

Matt, I did the same thing.
I had a solid gaming PC as my main and an expensive dual Athlon MP editing rig, then all of a sundden they started finally making truely solid multi-media laptops with the first good mobile Radeons, and blam, OC'ed gaming rig is touched maybe 1-2hrs a week (meh boot it up to play or else surf, email, word on the couch, or wherever), then upgraded to a pentium 4HT laptop make old PIII PC into NAS external store, and blam second editing rig becomes a ghost because I realize I'd rather have everything in one spot, even if it means doing renders overnight while I sleep instead of in 3/4 the time with a dedicated rig.
Sure you make compromises, but it's great having everything finally in one spot and I don't feel like I spent $2000 every two years on hardware I never use; instead just roll the combined amount into a great ~$2000 laptop every year. -

why desktop?
for the same price, you can get a desktop with AT LEAST 2x the gaming power as a similarly priced notebook
the desktop is upgradable
when a component on a desktop fails, its easy to fix. when such a thing occurs on a notebook, you might as well just get a new one
did i mention you get MOAR POWER on a desktop? -

most laptops only have limited upgradability. and then most of the stuff (i.e ram) is more expensive any way. i would go upgrading a desktop over a laptop anydayClick to expand...
one of those has to be a little 14/15/17" one with a laptop though. on my desktop i can have 2 24" no problem, plus i can stick something on the intergrated gpu.Click to expand...
go on average here, and i have to say on average desktops last longer.Click to expand...
well stuff the neons, you can do many other mods, get some decent fans in and overclock that bastard nicely.Click to expand...

It's called OPTIONS.
I grant you Desktops have more of them, but it seems many people don't quite understand that it's pretty easy to plug things into a laptop too, just like you plug them into a desktop.
Yeah and in regards to you post below.... external storage, beautiful thing. -

Not anymore! 46.15%-53.85%

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
If I could only have one computer, I'd definitely get a laptop over a desktop.
Portability and form factor is definitely more important to me than the extra power I'd get out of a similarly priced desktop (specially at lower price points these days).
Of course, like most people here, I've got desktops and laptops, so there's no choice anymore XD -

Instead of listing miconceptions, the main thing is WHAT's YOUR MOST important Feature in a computer ?
If you don't value portability and size and low heat/power, and instead just want the most ubber power you can get for the money, there's not contest, a desktop can give you the very fastest most powerful of whatever.
It's like as Lithus used as an example you ask, what's better a sports car or a truck, but then the whole time you're just looking for the highest top speed, not hauling or off-road capabilities.
At least now you can pick either for the benefits of both because we have SOLID gaming laptops, and we have SMALL but very capable HTPCs.
My main issue is the misconceptions about both, including quality. -
Well it depends if you have a desktop or a laptop, or better,, both! You can’t go wrong then!
I only have a personal laptop at the moment! -

Edit: and my eMachines desktop - it's a thing of beauty, ain't it!

Well if you're limited in funds (which would be the only reason forced to chose) IMO get BOTH by gettting a GF8800GT-512 or HD3870-512 instead of that overpriced GTX, and maybe 2GB instead of 4 or 500GB instead of 1TB. Take those savings buy a cheap laptop.
Then in the summer/fall buy a GF9800GTX/T200 or R700 replacement and memory/HDD if you feel you need more power/space.
If you're not forced by either your own preferences or a strict need, then why limit yourself? -

Definitely laptops! You can take it where ever you want..And still be productive...Such as doing work while you are at the John........

I have a Dell 420 with 768mb nvidia geforce 8800gtx for gaming. I travel quite a bit and it would be very difficult to take this with me on trips. Just bought the alienware m15x because of portability and just love this thing. You can't lose with having a notebook. Would just buy a notebook in the future if I had to chose.
-
I love the power and stability of my desktop and I don't burn my leg with it
, but laptops have their own pros and cons too. You really can't rate one over the other. When will Chaz start DesktopReview.com?

Laptop in general, but what for?
Laptop for most things but desktop for gaming, mostly because I can't afford a gaming laptop and a desktop is easier to upgrade. -
It looks like it’s all down to budget, if you have two then you’re ok, but if you just have a laptop, switching sides looks like a good choose!

I’ve found out so far that!
Most importantly with desktops!
- Power of the machine all components
- upgrade of components
- some people like the stableness of a desktop "runs all day every day"
- it’s the main hub "control centre kind of thing"
Most importantly with laptops!
- Portability obviously
- slimness, no wires ect
- uses any external component a desktop use, but might take a while to find all the fiddly extra ports/multiple port connectors!
Well this poll will close on 02-14-2008 at 07:15 PM, so we should know the answer to the question on this forum! - Power of the machine all components
-
Laptops have the benefit of being mobile. I have used desktops for more than a decade, but have bought a laptop only about an year ago because I had to be able to carry a computer with me. If it hadn't become a necessity, I probably wouldn't have made that buy.
By the way, I am also using desktops whenever available because, in my experience, they are more reliable and perform better for the same money. -
Intel are predicting that there will be 50-50 notebooks to desktops out there in 20** something!,
and that some people wont a mobile solution, not just to have their pc stuck to a desk, when they can have their laptop any ware round the house! -

Retail Notebook unit sales exceeded Desktop sales for the first time as a sustained quarter last year (3rd quarter), whereas sales $ exceeded desktops starting back in 2005. According to ARStechnica, new notebook unit sale may far exceed desktops this year and be the first time the whole years units exceed desktop;

Now that of course doesn't include the large pre-existing upgrade DIY market which is where most of us are.
With prices bottoming out, IMO it's almost pointless for the average user to get a desktop now, with only the power users requiring the Oomph that can only be had by a desktop. Every new purchase I get asked about at work is laptop, the only 'desktop' I've been asked about in over a year was a 24" iMac, which is not your traditional desktop and just as tweak limited as a laptop. -

I wouldn’t say everybody is crazy about notebooks, but it’s getting there!
The very big problem with notebooks is that they just don’t last, people buying them they think they will last forever like their desktop friends, but they just don’t. You have to buy a new one every year to keep it nice.
With my hp dv2000, nearly a year old and needs replacing
soon because already
the fan is shagged and sounds like it is going to fall of its bearings, like running without oil or something, well that is what happens to plastic on plastic, + it runs 24/7 shutup!
The lcd is buzzing, move the screen but it comes back 5 secs l8ter
Plastic bits are coming loos and falling off,
All of the plastic under the bottom of the notebook, especially the covers are all warped, because of the major heat,
and the touch pad buttons are totally worn and nearly falling out
Everything else ok apart from the hard drive which is 51 d c when running for 5 minutes, left palm is hottt!
Hope the dell xps m1530 that I order sometime this year won’t have these problems, as i need more power than a cruddy 1.66ghz pro and intels combined gma is not up for the job! Play 720p-1080p and the processor/graphics cannot handle it ! Come on hp, you supposed to give me entertainment. It comes standard with a 720p screen, so why can’t I play 720p movies
+ hp are supposed to be a trusty well built machine, so i dare ask what other notebooks are like!!!
And for the record 4 all you hp users, hp quick play is *hit, waste of time, stop hitting the quick play button when i am typing! And taking 10 seconds to load up in the process
