hey guys i have a question. Is it possible to shut off the screen of a laptop without the actual computer shutting down? eg: i want torun a program for a day or 2 but don't want to wear out my screen.
Is there an easy way to do this? I have an inspiron 600m w/ XP

You can have it set to screen saver mode with just a blank screen.

well there should be a shortcut key on the keyboard itself..for eg my laptop's screen goes black when I press Fn+F6..!!
Or go into the power settings and adjust the time for the 'Turn of Monitor'..!!
In XP it can be done through the Power Settings > Power Schemes.... -
If your using Vista, I recommend the "Display Off" tile for Windows Mobility Center.

I was looking for something like this because I like to play music in the background while I sleep and having the screen off, obviously makes that easier, LOL -
Wow booboo! That's a great find!
I have the same problem because I use my laptop in docking station environment with an external monitor. What I do is create a new power scheme called "Docking" and set the monitor to always be off, and to also do nothing when I close the lid. That way, the computer will always be on with the lid closed.
