    ok...
so here is what I have.

about a year ago my fsc amilo burned its graphic card (mxm go 6800) and mbo...

I replaced the mbo with a new one, and I put in the new ati mxm x1800...

    so here's what happens.

    I press power...
    "power on" diode goes ON.
HDD and CD show signs of life (they spin)
but the display stays completely black

I press caps lock... but the diode stays OFF
I press the "mute/fan" button but they also stay OFF

so... where is the problem now? the graphic card or the MBO?
I also try to boot the PC, this time with no Graphic card...

and same thing happens... only difference is
that the display backlight starts up, and is gray...

    so any suggestions?

all the cables are correctly connected.

Caps or Num Lock LED should be enabled and turn on/off as toggled after BIOS finishes POST (power on self test)

i'd be checking my CPU and RAM to verify they are socketed properly...
you have some kinda hardware problem somewhere,,,

take the CPU out,, and try to boot,,, see if symptoms are the same....

if so you most likely have a motherboard or cpu problem

just giving you stomething to try,,

    later,

caps lock, num lock and scroll(?) lock diodes do light up(for a moment) when I press the power button... (as normaly should)

but after that, there's no response from the keyboard (none of them light up after I press the assigned key)...

so I guess the problem is somewhere after the POST, and what ever comes next...
so I wonder... what is "NEXT"?

can a computer boot it self without the graphic card it self? ... or is graphic card essential for the pc startup?
I know that I cant run it without the graphic card..., but at least I'd diagnose the problem without having to service it.

does your laptop have a vga pr dvi output?
If so, I recommend plugging your laptop into the external screen, so you can eliminate screen failure and screen connection issues.

Also you should put the go6800 back into your system and see that it starts up. If it does that that means either your x1800 is dead or its not compatible with your system.
If the indicator lights come on, your motherboard is still working.
Your laptop is detecting that their is something wrong so it is shutting itself off to prevent further damage.

You need the graphics card installed for the screen to work. It is essential for pc usage.

go 6800 is fried... thats why I bought the x1800
the whole story is that a while back, my mbo and graphic card got fried.
the whole mxm port caught fire, and the mbo/graphic were scrap.
I then bought a new mbo, and a new graphic card, but something seems to be faulty again.
I'm not sure what the problem is :(
hopefully something didnt get burned again :(

Are you sure the BIOS supports the x1800? mxm may be a standard module, but inter-changeability is very limited.

Okay, well I am actually having the same problem with my Voodoo laptop, and it is a motherboard failure.
I am not 100% sure in your case. I am not sure if upgrading to the x1800 really works. Well I am sure it will fit, but whether the system will recognize it is in question.

If the system is not reading the X1800, than I would recommend getting a used or new 6800 ultra for the new motherboard. That way you know that the graphics card and new motherboard work.

If the motherboard dies, 90% of the time the MXM or modular graphics card is completely unaffected. I have had my gpu die on me, and it did not affect the motherboard in any way.
I have now had my motherboard die on me, and the gpu is still working perfectly.

Just out of curiosity, when you bought the x1800, did you buy it through MXM upgrade?
If so, did it come with any kind of test results?
The card may have just been a bad Gpu, but there is really no way to know for sure.

I would contact MXM-upgrade if you have not already, cause they may be able to help you more.

Did you try upgrading the Bios? You may need to, in order to give support for new graphics cards.
