i pulled out a 44pin ide hd with connectors that look like this:
    http://bixnet.net/images/NBHD-IDE-Connector.jpg
i was about to install a diy ssd (compact flash with cf to ide converter), when i realised the pin configuration was a little different like this:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CF-to-44-pins...ryZ41994QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
as you can see from the ebay picture, there is no 'missing' pins like on the hd i pulled out, meaning it wont fit into the socket
i'm just wondering whether i bought the wrong one,
    thanks

    Hi.

If it will physicaly fit, you should be ok, the pin most likely is not used, they just did not remove it.

    regards

    John.

okay, well the laptop uses a 39 pin ata interface, and the drive on ebay is a 44 pin interface. That is cause of the 4 pins to the far right of the drive in teh picture. However, the adaptor should have had one missing pin in the bottom row, for alignment purposes. If you coordinate and align the adaptor properly, you can bend back the pin which is not supposed to be there, or you can return the adaptor and get one which has 39 pin interface.

lol if i bend the pin back, the adapter will not fit in flush into the interface....
only thing to do is to break it off or somethin? wud this stop the adapter from transferring data normally? I always thought laptops came standard with the 44 pin interface, and so far the only adapter i have found with the 39 pin connector is the addonics one.hmmm....

all lapto harddrives are 39 pin and or 44 pin.
reason being, is that 39 of the pins are used for data transfer, smart readings and power, while the 4 lone pins on the end of the drive are there as jumpers to set the drive to cable select master or slave.
Thus each harddrive is typically 44 pins, as marketed, but the ata interface is only 39 pins.

I am not sure if bending or cutting the pin would work well, is it possible to return the adaptor and get the addonics 39 pin adaptor.

when i realised that there was no 'missing pins' in this either,
this is prob. a dumb question, but can someone explain this to me lol!-
do laptops in general always have blocked pins?- confused!
