I was just wondering if the amount of free space on one's C: drive affects the laptop's performance, speed, efficiency, or anything of the like. of my 282 GB I currently have 74 GB free, and it seems as though my Dell XPS-1340 is performing basic tasks a little slower than it had been at say half-capacity. Maybe it's just me, and I've heard different things from friends, but have always wondered if laptop performance was affected by harddrive capacity.

No, it shouldn't effect it. I would recommend getting ccleaner and Defraggler. As you use more space, the more likely hood that your computer may need some basic maintenance.

defragging it would be your best bet like what cloudbyday suggested

I thought it would cause you notebook to feel sluggish since windows uses hdd space as a swap-file, basically memory.

ur capacity won't affect efficiency as long as u have spare space of about 10GB for pagefile.... but the speed of the drive does affect the efficiency... To do so , u can try defraging and i use SmartDefrag which is easy to use... also i use tune-up system utilites 2010 to defrag registry and clean it and also get rid of unnecessary temp files to increase hard drive space...
