Your notebook probably uses IDE drives. Are you looking for performance or storage ?
2 things:
- Download CPU-Z, and post the Chipset Details.
- Go into Device Manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers > See if there is an "Ultra-ATA Storage Controller" (?)
-
First thing, HP used an adapter to connect the HDD to the motherboard. it is a small plastic stip covering the pins on the regular HDD. Make sure you remove it from the old one and transfer to the new one, otherwise it wont fit.
Secondly, the V2000 series was available initially with 2.5" PATA HDD's and later offered with 2.5" SATA HDD's. Depending on when you purchased the system it should have HDD with either one of those connections. just look for the model number of the stock HDD(from device manager), search the manufacturers website and that should lead you to the type of HDD needed for the replacement. -
For high speed, your best bet is going with the Samsung HM160HC. It is the fastest IDE harddrive available. It is a 160gb 5400rpm drive.
If you are looking for a larger capacity drive, the only option you have is the WD2500BEVE drive, which is a 250gb 5400rpm drive. (This drive is slightly slower than the HM160HC, but it is still rankede as the second fastest drive for the IDE interface)
Here is my review of the Samsung HM160HC. There are comparison graphs between the Samsung and the WD drive.

Before buying the harddrive, please list the chipset you have. If your system is old, it may not be able to support harddrives greater than 137GB, so with either of teh drives, you would have to partition the drive to be able to use all of the space the drive provides.

thank you andy, please bear with me i am notthat computer savy, first i am looking for both performance and storage,i went into the device mananger and what i saw was this primary ide channel, secoundary ide channel and standard dual channel, there was nothing about ultra-ata standard controller. also i had trouble downloading the cpu-z
-
Ok, in Device Manager, under Disk Drives - The HDD model no. will be given. Post that, and here is the download link to CPU-Z....
Alternate download link. -
hey andy thanks again, sorry but i had to leave, the info you wanted is IC2I5N080ATMR04-0 and the chipset info is ATI EXPRESS200(RS480).BROTHER I WILL CONTACT YOU AGAIN I HAVE TO GO TO WORK THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP PEACE.

(Presario v2000z ?)
Alright, NB is RS480(M). But need to know the Southbridge as well ?
I'm guessing -> ATI SB400.
Probably is ATA-6 compliant, but I can't find the SB400 datasheet. Found these notebooks with similar configs (SB400), and they list ATA-6 as compatible.

Now, I am not really sure. Pls do confirm the southbridge in CPU-Z (ATI SB400 ?).
How much storage space do you need ? -
hey andy thanks again, yes the southbridge is SB400, and the capacity of storage i am looking for is 320gb and if possible a seagate.
-
than you very much minor. peace

hi k-ron, cool review, thank you for your reply. here is my situation i have a compaq presario v2000 notebook with an 80gb internal hdd (refurbished) i have owned it for 2 years, i mainly use it to edit tivo files, i also have a 1tb wd ext hdd to store my tivo files, i just recently upgraded to 2gb of ram and when i run the video editor (video redo) it is quite slow, anyway i am looking for a storage capacity of 320gb preferrably a seagate, and something that is fast, i can afford between $80-90. here is the info you asked for the chipset is ATIEXPRESS200(RS480) also the southbridge is (SB400) the model# is IC25N080ATMR04-0 i know you suggested the SAMSUNGHM160HC AND THE WD2500BEVE how sure are you on the compatability with my notebook? anyway any help would be kindly appreciated. thank you in advance.
-
Any 2.5" PATA drive will work for you. Your chipset may have a max capacity limitation of 137GB as some said, but i'm not sure. If it's so then you have to split the harddrive into several partitions if you buy any HDD greater than that. Other than that, any 2.5" pata will work.
-
Well both are compatible with your computer. Your system should not have any problem reading drives larger than 137Gb. My Dell 8500 recognizes the 160gb of my Hm160HC and its about 6.5yrs old.
your system is much newer, so it shouldnt have any problem recognizing the drive.
Please keep in mind that the Samsung drive formats to 149GB and the WD 2500BEVE drive formats to 234Gb.
Both are good drives, the Samsung is only a few hairs faster than the WD drive.
