I'm ordering a dv2000t with a t7200 in it, 2gb 400mhz ddr2 ram, and 5400rpm 80gb hard drive. Is it worth it performance wise to custom install faster ram and a faster hard drive?

Ive ordered the same onebut if you want to customize the memory later i recommend you a 1gb mb ram as i did so i can sell that gb and buy 2 for just a little more money.

I would order the minimum amount of RAM you can from HP, because if I recall correctly, they charge $275 for 2GB of RAM. You can DIY for around $80/stick = $160 total, save yourself about $100. We don't know what you plan to do with the notebook, so it is hard to recommend system components.

Well its not that I'm going to be running a ton of demanding applications, its just if I'm going to spend 1500 on a notebook for school, I'd rather do it right. HP won't answer my question about how upgrading memory and ram will effect the warranty until after I order, so if you guys know the answer to this that would be great. Also, how hard is it to open the casing to install new ram? And if I'm getting new ram I should get ddr2 667 right?

upgrading ram/memory sticks will not void your warranty on the laptop i dont know if the actual memory would be warranted by them anymore but that would be covered un the mfgr warranty.

I see you have a 7200rpm hardrive. Did you upgrade that yourself? How did it effect battery life with the different RAM and faster hardrive?
