    Hey guys,

This forum caught my eyes and I am looking for a few answers to my questions. I have two questions pertaining to my motherboard and its ability to upgrade.

    Laptop model #: dv6447om
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...00&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3446955&lang=en
    (specification list)

I ran CPU Z, and my specifications for the motherboard are as follows:
    __________________________________________________
    -Quanta 30BB

    -i945GM

-Rev .03 (I guess that means revision 3)

    CPU I currently have:

    -T2450 (2.0GHz w/ 533 FSB)

    -Socket 479 mPGA

    GPU I currently have:

-Intel integrated media accelerator 950 (i945gm).
    __________________________________________________

    1. Can I upgrade my processor down the road? If so, what is the best one I can upgrade to? I have read that it can only go with 667mhz FSB processors. I am guessing only a select few T7x00 series or T5x00 series CPUs.

    2. I have been reading about the 8600gs/gt. Is it possible to buy this card separately for a notebook? What ever happened to that ASUS usb attachable GPU?

Well, thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me.

    1. Yes, the cpu can be upgraded to a Socket M Core 2 Duo T7x00 where x is an even number(as in T7200, T7400 etc) or T5000(T5200, T5300 etc) series based on the napa platform. Upgrade to a 'Santa Rosa processor' is not possible.

    2. No, not possible. The best you can do is to upgrade to the Go 7400 but you will have to upgrade the motherboard as well since HP integrates the GPU(integrated/dedicated doesnt matter) with the mobo.

Hey, thanks for the help. I figured the 800MHz fsb santa rosa CPUs would not work.

I have another question though. Where can I go to by a motherboard that supports the go7400, newegg? Is the card integrated or do I somehow buy the go7400 separate. Is there any possibility I can get a go 8600m gs/gt compatable mobo?

Sorry for the multitude of questions, but I am very curious, thanks again.

Newegg doesnt sell notebook mobotherboards. Plus laptop MB's are proprietary in nature so you will either have to procure it directly from HP or try ebay.

The GPU by itself doesnt exist. You wont find a Go 7400 for the dv6000 by itself as you would say a desktop modular card. You will have to buy the motherboard to get the GPU.

EDIT: See this ebay auction for example a motherboard with the Go 7200...

Oh I see, so the motherboard includes the GPU, no matter what. I think it would be a great market if they allowed you to purchase it separately.

Well, is ebay and HP really the only places I can get these motherboards? I was hoping for a site like zipzoomfly or newegg to have some, oh well.

Also, what is this PCI-E expansion slot I keep hearing about? Nothing to do with GPUs? It can't be like the desktop counterpart right?

That is all of the questions I have for now. But, I really appreciate your help. At least I know I can definitely upgrade my processor.

Buy it from HP's parts store if you want a reliable source or from a HP reseller. ZZF, Newegg dont stock any notebook motherboards. Integration of parts saves space, makes it lighter, thinner etc. The tradeoff being that notebooks are less upgradable. For laptops the former trumps the latter. THere are some modular grphics like MXM available on some laptops but still upgradability is limited..

PCI-e is best for TV Tuners, wwan cards, sound, extra USB/firewire ports etc, they dont have the necessary bandwidth to power a proper GPU. Its similar to PCI or 1x PCIe slots on a desktop motherboard.

Oh, okay so it is a low end slot. It sound like you are right. But, can you explain this:

    http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/gma950/index.htm

I think they are referring to the 950 chipset, but it is a little confusing for me. And, yes I realized from the beginning that most laptops are not upgradeable when it comes to some CPUs and almost all of the GPUs. But, I want to make sure that a possible mod or work around is absolutely not possible.

    http://www.doom3world.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=20183&p=184668#p184668

I was trying to fix a problem with doom 3. The game runs okay for the GPU I have, I was a bit surprised that it was a fully supported game by Intel, but the lighting is messed up when on the low settings. Anyway, this one guy said the following above.

I am going to open up my laptop in a week or two to see what is underneath this thing. I am aware of how much time it will take, and the amount of screws there are, but I am willing to do this in order to find out more. I will post a picture when I finally do so. At least this will prepare me for when I do in fact go to upgrade my processor. I am think of replacing the thermal paste with Artic Silver 5 as well, so my temps may go down a bit.

What do you mean by MXM?

Again, I am sorry for the amount of questions, but you are doing me a tremendous favor!

The Expresscard slot on your notebook and the PCIex16 slots are totally different. Considering you have the integrated graphcis card you wont have the PCIe-x16 slot on the motherboard. Intel is just listing the capabilities of the chipset. It doesnt mean it will be implemented by the OEM.

As for as MXM is concerned, its a modular GPU by nvidia designed to be a standard and in theory upgradable. There are already many different versions of MXM and most mainstream brands dont tend to use it. Dell has modular graphics but again they are proprietary and upgrade options are limited to what Dell offers for that particular system.

So, MXM (modular) are basically the mobile graphics cards.

Even if it is integrated is there still a chance I may have an empty slot on my motherboard that supports these MXM cards? I could theoretically disable the Intel card in bios, and then pop the new one in that I buy from hp or something. Thanks for the help btw, I am definitely going to find out for sure when I open my laptop up.

I think this is what the connector (slot) looks like:
