    dvd rom drive

    for some reason my compaq C300EA wont read disc's any got any idea's as to how i can fix this?

    1. Is it listed in Device Manager? If not, uninstall the IDE channels then get Windows to redtect the hardware.

    2. See this page and check whether you have Upper filter and Lower filter entries in the registry. They can make the optical drive disappear.

    Go into Device Manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. See if one of the channels has a current transfer rate of UDMA 2 (that will be the optical drive) then uninstall that channel. Go to the top of the list in Device Manager, right click and select Detect new hardware (or whatever it says). That will flush out any connection problem.

    Next test, can you boot from the optical drive (eg using Windows installation or recovery disc or Linux Live CD)? That will test if the drive is OK at the hardware level. If you can boot from the drive then the problem is with Windows.

    there isnt one with UDMA 2 in the list my primary ide channel is set to multi -word DMA 2

    That will do. (The HDD is probably SATA and not using an IDE channel.)
