l am using a laptop with vista home basic, and my cpu is celeron m550 2G with 2038mb ram, l use it as a htpc to watch dvd movie disks, but one day l played a pirate vcd in dvd rom drive, it suddenely had this awful noise and the picture all got messed up, so l pulled it out immediately, now l can still play non-pirate dvd disks smoothly, except it has this occasional pause of 3-4 seconds during the film, very annoying, does anyone know how to fix this problem? lf l replace it with an external usb dvd rom, will it play dvd as smooth as internal dvd rom?

I've never heard of a pirate disc breaking a DVD drive. Your issue might be something else. Try reinstalling whatever media player you use and check out if you have any processes spiking your processing power.

The noises might have just been because it was a VCD. My drive gets noisy reading certain media types or CD's.

Also, stop using pirate stuff. Downloading that junk will get you a virus like there's no tomorrow.

I've rarely had problems with a dvd drive playing movies. As far as I know there isn't any inherent reason why it would be problematic. Some DVD players even use standard 3.5in DVD drives.

What codecs/media player are you using? Also, did you check out if your computer is using a lot of processing power for something else as I suggested?
