    hi all,

i have an hp 500 laptop which i use for field work. the dvd writer in it is very selective. i have many dvds (burned, pirated, originals) which cannot be read, but are OK when i use in my other laptop (hp dv 1000) and in my desktop pc. any ideas how to make my hp 500 dvd writer read all my dvds?

If it's an older model, you need to swap out the DVD drive.

Nice job mentioning Pirated! Not necessary glad you could throw it in. But what Lithus said sounds correct, and burned stuff is always more temperamental in my experience.

LOL, I didn't even read most of what he wrote. All the info I needed was in the title.

my work takes me to remote places worldwide, and most often, the places i go to, original DVDs are not available. and if i want to keep sane, pirated DVDs are the only way.

    thanks for the help guys!

I did not mean to come down hard on you, or anyone else who posts. But if it is not necessary to the situation or needed don't post illegal stuff. It does not help the forum and answering sometimes appears to condone. I am not a cop and have no interest in making the world free of piracy. But if you do stuff that is quasi legal have the respect to not phrase in that way. I am not above it so don't think I am trying to act like a saint, that is not it. If you know it is not legal do not post in this forum, many others on the WEB are happy to help. Just don't mention it!

While replacement with a newer burner is the best solution, you could also search for a firmware update for the existing burner (what model is it?). This might improve its read and write performance.
