Its on the hotter end but there are a few things that must be factored in.

Were you playing a game or was the computer idling?

Also roughly, what was the ambient temperature of the room? Oh and is the laptop getting adequate air ventilation?

I believe Nvidia GPUs can go up to around 100 Celsius for a laptop (Not sure offhand as my laptop is switched to GMA950 mode right now). On a desktop the threshold for slowdown is 130 Celsius (Nvidia 7900 GT).

No, it can't go to 130 degrees on a desktop. It can go higher. 130 is simply where the control panel alerts you because higher than that is risky.
So yeah, GPU's can get hot. Check the driver control panel. If it says the GPU is too hot, it's a problem. Otherwise it's fine.

    No...

Mine gets close to that when idle, doing nothing, with no forced fans. When gaming my BIOS fans may kick on at 70-75C depending which way the arrows fly ;)

The attached is for my SECOND 9700GS/heatsink, which has the same tempertures as the first card. I had asked the question to Dell

Too bad the heat production of video cards is still huge!
Imagine if all that heat which is produced was saved in battery life!

They should design something better without losing speed!

Actaully, I believe you will get a warning message at 90C for the 7900gs, but thats beside the point. Yeah, I would try to bring that down to like 60C (that would be a more comfortable idle temp). You can either force fan speeds OR if you have had the notebook for a while you might want to crack it open and check it isnt loaded with dust or something (blocking airflow). One question, your not using this on like a bed or a carpet or anything, ha, that would probably be your problem if that was the case.

Yea, it slow protects at 102C. Most of us do use I8kfan for day to day stuff.

    So glad I only got a 6800 ..

80c is too hot , I idle at 47c and its quite warm on my lap at gaming 60c .

Wan't the GS supposed to be a cool card due to the smaller production method ?

And where is the ATI answer ?

This is the price you pay for performance. The 7900GS is a 20 watt chip, the 7800GO is a 35 watt chip. Nvidia should know how hot their GPU's run, no?

ATI needs to come up with a 10 watt chip that blows the doors off the 7900 class of GPU
