I have a Western Digital model WD3200BJKT-75F4T0 connected to my eSATA port. When I'm online the port is rated at the maximum 3 Gb/s. However, when I'm offline it reduces to 1.5 Gb/s. What gives?

Yeah but would drivers have anything to do with internet connectivity?

I have absolutely no idea, but it's the only thing i can think of, a somehow borked driver. Im kinda baffled by the OP's problem.

Ah, I see, its the terminology that getting in the way. Its a terminology most frequently used in editing software. Online/offline are indicators whether there is a connection to the web, an external device, etc.
Still a logical conclusion. Indeed the connection to the web could have activated the necessary updates needed to solve the problem? One reason why I hate automatic updates.

I should have figured that out myself since I have software that is only partially functional unless you have a web connection. Thanks all.

His suggestion is a valid one, but if you have something more plausible, I'm all ears.

your drivers are already installed....i dont see how online/offline would change drivers. They should stay the same no matter what unless you update them. Sorry the internet/network affecting eSATA doesn't doesn't make sense to me

I don't see why it should matter either, i meant a broken driver that for some reason is misbehaving, not the driver requiring being online (as part of normal operating behavior) to get SATA II speeds. Could be a conflict between two programs, the problem is an unusual one and when you have no idea what might be causing it, trying to hunt down the cause starting with drivers isn't a bad idea. Speaking of this, have you tried in safe mode, you'll know right away if the program is with 3rd party software.

good point. Also first i would try to reinstall it first if he hasn't yet and then try safe mod.
