    Hey guys,
I'm wanting to get a SSD sometime in the near future, but I dont want to lose my optical drive, so I've been looking for a power over eSATA external enclosure to put the 2.5" drive that came with the laptop in so I can easily take a lot of files with me.

Does anyone here use anything like this that they would recommend?

Check Amazon or eBay there are a ton for $10-$30 on there that would work just fine, both portable and desk units.

I'm having a hard time finding some that will work with eSATAp though. I want to be able to connect it using just the eSATAp cable, not an eSATA and USB.

I ordered one off eBay for eSATA

    Here

I figured it's all I need. I'm only using it as a Fraps drive

for those that care I got the HD enclosure that was $1.27 + shipping off of eBay

This is the benchmark of the 320gig hard drive that came with the Alienware in the enclosure. I don't know how it compares to it being internal, couldn't find a benchmark SS.

If you do a search for seagate goflex they do a powered esata cable that will work with any sata hard drive. Doesn't come with a case but it's only £15

That looks like an awesome case for a great price danyune, do you mind me asking where you live and how long it took you to receive it? I looked at the shipping and it says 13-22 business days?!?!

How about getting an enclosure for your ODD and a caddy for a 2nd HDD in your laptop. I'd bet you would use the HDD much more than the ODD.

it did take about 2 weeks to get to me

very basic case, esata plugs in and it uses a usb port to power which I didn't mind with my USB hub

    definitely not too slow either

Nope not for me I wouldn't, thanks for the idea though. Not to mention the fact that while I would be able to do it, I really don't feel like gutting my laptop to get to the ODD

Getting to the ODD isn't as tough as you might think. Well, in the VAIO it's not. Had mine changed out in a jiffy.

Did the same thing, except went for the momentus xt as a upgrade in my M15x. Used the Vantec NexStar CX enclosure, came with a SATA to eSATA Bracket in case yor desktop MB doesn't support eSata. Now I have 2 ports, I only use one at a time though so was unnecessary.
Co$t$ a bit more but all works as it should.

Does anyone know if you can buy a slim expresscard to eSATA adapter that you can use power over? I know they do power over eSATA expresscards but so far I've only seen ones that have a big plastic thing jutting out meaning the inflexible eSATAp cable juts out even further.

That looks like a great deal danyune,
May I ask what the case exterior is made out of?

How big (## GB) of a Hdd did you put in it?
