Bought a cheap pcmcia SATA card of feebay, shows up as VIA RAID Controller 3249. Connects to (known good) external drive for a few seconds then drops connection then loops connecting / dropping / reconnecting.

Please, is this relatively easy to troubleshoot (on Toshiba Tecra M7) or should I just move on to another card -- and if so which one?

I am a believer in you get what you pay for and by purchasing a cheap card you get low and even non-functioning products. I would suggest you look at cards on Newegg and compare the reviews.

I agree, though I've had my share of trouble with brand names too, and generally suspect my ignorance before their hardware.

This is my first PCMCIA card ever - so I wondered if the connect/reconnect issue might be Toshiba or SATA specific (e.g. something other than the card itself).

NewEgg user reviews of PCMCIA eSata cards run the gamut and include a lot of conflicting results and opinions, especially on throughput issues.

I had no expectations and am ready to try another card. Not looking for RAID, just want to connect two WD 1TB drives for now.

Anyone had success with eSata PCMCIA on a Toshiba?
