Does anybody know of an energy efficient notebook hard drive ? I dont think I am ready to make the jump to a SSD.

A 250GB Fujitsu drive I think...
But basically any 5400rpm drive would do I think - drives like the Scorpio Blue range for example. -

and for the sake of being able to hook up a drive to external USB, you want to try and stay below .5 amps. That's the power limit for a USB port.

I found even older IDE drives needed external power to drive the USB. 2.5W was not enough to spin up the drive. -
