    is this statement correct?

with external HDD, if i drop or shake it too much and there is a physical damage (wheter the disk is spinning or not) the next time you turn it on (or soon enough) you will find out that there is something not right with the disk.

what sign should i look for? noises? any other?

a crunch, the fact that the computer will not boot into whatever OS is a good reminder. if it does then run HDTune

If it`s USB 2.0 , then you most likely cannot read the SMART data, so it makes it difficult to test, you can do a bad sector check using HDTUNE

Some makes of HDD`s make a lot of noise my WD 1GB sound like a bag of hammers, but it works fine.
