just picked up a gs40. the laptop is going to serve double duty as my work desktop (replacing a Lenovo t420s), where I use three monitors.
the MSI is capable of driving all three monitors with the dsum, dvi, and super port (this will purely be for office type programs), but I'd really prefer not to have to hook up a bunch of wires (three monitor wires, Ethernet, usb hub, audio), and would much rather just use a dock.
Lenovos were great for that -- I just slapped it onto a dock and started working. I understand that's not going to happen with the MSI since it's primarily a gamming laptop.. but... what options are out there?
I've already looked at the usb3.0 solutions, and I'm not thrilled with them -- they seem quirky and having to compress video isn't something I'm interested in.
The display port solutions look promising, though from everything I read, they're almost as quirky. and I really wonder about driving three monitors from a single dp port.
the most interesting solution I've seen so far is an external video card, using thunderbolt. The gs40 has thunderbolt. Are there any non DIY, commercial external graphics solutions out there that will work with thunderbolt (I understand most likely I'll have to buy a graphics card). should I suck it up for now and wait for msi, who I believe is rumored to be releasing a standard thunderbolt dock soon?
Anyway, any thoughts on this would be welcome.
external graphics for msi gs40?
