    i have a problem :(
i've been using my external 500gig seagate harddrive for about 1 year and have all my information and pictures, music and what not in it, but i just received my asus g50 and when i plug it in it says i need to reformat the drive before it can read any of the information, but that will erase all the info. is there anything i can do? is there anyway to get the information back or to make it work without formatting? i have about 350g with of stuff that i cannot afford to lose.

    do not format the drive.

Plug the external into the computer you hav been using it with for the last year.
If the drive is picked up by another system and it does not prompt you to format it, than their is an issue with your asus laptop.
try reinstalling the USB drivers on your g50v, and try connecting the drive again.

the physical harddrive to USB adaptor may be dead.

What you can do, is take the external enclosure apart and get the harddrive out of it.
Than you can try connecting the harddrive directly into a desktop in order to get the files off.
If your laptop has esata you should also be able to get the files off that way. That will by pass the entire adaptor, so if the harddrive spins up, you will be able to get your files off.

If you dont have a desktop or esata, you may want to invest into one of these:

    or from here:
    http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=378902&prodlist=froogle

It will allow you to connect any 2.5" or 3.5" SATA or IDE harddrive to a USB port.

it doesnt seem to be a usb problem because neither the ubs or firewire worked on either of my laptops so something is definitely wrong with th HD itself, there's gotta be a way i can take the data out, like a system restore type of thing lol.

i mentioned to use a desktop, only because you can directly connect the harddrive to the motherboard, thus overriding the adaptor.

You can try going into disc management in windows, when the drive is connected.
In there you can see if the drive is really recognized or not.
