Im looking into purchasing a Western Digital 250GB model soon, but i need some info from the experts. What are key specs i should be looking for and what brands are most reliable?

For some reason i know and trust in Seagate the most, but what about WD? Seagate seems to be more expensive (significantly more, otherwise i would have bought a Seagate).

The specific model i am looking at is the WDG1U2500N which i found for $100 at circuit city. Any info is appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Safer

How long have you had yours? Does it transfer files fairly quickly? Can you turn it on and off without turning off your computer?

    Thanks.

Western Digital makes the best hard drives. There is really nothing specific to look for specifications-wise in an external drive. An 8MB cache is something to have.

I was particularly wondering about 2MB cache vs 8MB cache. How big a difference will one make over the other?

The circuit city deal really has me excited enough to buy it as a little gift for my birthday this week. Ill buy it on tuesday unless something better comes up.

It depends on how you want to use it.
For data backup 2mb will do the job perfectly.

    Thanks guys.
I purchased the unit today and already have all my files backed up. The pictures make it look big but the real thing is so small :)

Mind giving a rough mental image of the size I can compare with?

Sorry, i forgot about this thread.

Hmm...i don't know if you are a gamer but if you'ver ever seen a deluxe edition set of cds for Battlefield 1942, it is very close in dimensionels.
I guess like a small but thick paperback novel.
