Try one at a time. If one fails to boot then you have a defective stick.

According to Acer 4720z spec your have an Intel GL960 chipset which supports 533MHz RAM only up to 2GB (2x1GB). Intel datasheet for 96x mobile chipsets also notes the maximum supported memory size for GL960 as 2GB. That could be the problem. However, sometimes people have managed to go beyond manufacturer recommended limitations. Since I don't have experience with GL960 chipset I can't say whether 4GB will work or not.

P.S : 667MHz is backward compatible with 533MHz, therefore RAM speed is not the problem.

Yup, the GL960 chipset only supports up to 2GB of RAM. Depending on the BIOS, the notebook may or may not boot with more than 2GB installed, but if it does boot with more than 4GB you will not have access to more than 2GB anyway.
