    hello,

i'm looking for a fast harddisk for a laptop.

it is a laptop of 4 years old, so the interface for the harddisk is ide

what do you advice to buy ?

as far as i can see, the only fast and new ones in ide are the scorpio's.
but maybe i'm wrong, what do you advice?

    thank you so much

SATA uses IDE also, IDE stands for Integrated Drive Electronics..

You're looking for a 2.5" PATA hard drive, and yes, the newer scorpio is to preffer. The 320GB(?) i think.

Their are two high speed IDE/PATA notebook hard drives, the Samsung HM160HC and the WD3200BEVE.
The samsung is a 160gb 5400rpm drive and the Western digital is a 320gb 5400rpm drive. Both should perform very similar to each other because they both use 160gb platters. The WD just has two of them, while the samsung has one.
The Samsung will be the better buy, since it is cheaper, has less moving parts, so it runs quieter and cooler, and it has one less platter, so seek times are naturally faster on a single platter drive than a double platter configuration.

Here is my review of the Samsung HM160HC:

There are also SSD PATA options at RocketDisk and i'm sure other places. I don't know how much u r willing to invest in a 4 year old laptop but you will surely see a huge improvement with an SSD

Are you entirely sure it's IDE and not SATA? Isn't 4 years ago when they started introducing SATA?

Erhm, IDE could mean SATA aswell as many people think the old PATA connection is called IDE, which is wrong :p

well i just looked at the specs of the laptop (i don't have it in my possesion right now, and i didn't know the model) but it looks like it could be a sata.
so i need to check that first, but if it a sata does the samsung still hold ?

i have been looking at the solid state disks, but that is way to pricey.

    thanks guys

If your system uses SATA harddrives, the samsung drive will not work.
Some good SATA drives to look at which have very good bang for the buck are:
    Hitachi 7K320
    WD3200BEKT
    WD5000BEVT
