    Hi all, I have a HP dv1311se. it has 1.4 celeron m cpu socket 479. I

want to beef it up a bit in power by upgrading the cpu. mainboard is

the Quanta 09b8 with inter i855 chipset. Bios is f.23. I'm looking for

a definitive answer as to what is the fastest cpu I can pop in. I

have read a lot of posts and have seen "only celeron" to "duo cores".

I'm fairly certain I can't put any dual core cpu in this and equally

certain I can put in at least a pentium m 1.8. Please anyone who knows

more about this I would really appreciate the help. I have to replace

the fan again so I have to open it up anyway. I just don't want

to go through all that and have it not boot so I want to put something

in I know will work. any help greatly appreciated.

Note:unit serves my purposes and I cant afford another so no "not worth

it" or "just get a new one" bs, just real answers or beautiful silence. :)

The fastest CPU you can swap in is any Pentium M with a 400MHz FSB. I believe the fastest clock speed in that series is 2.1GHz.

^ namaiki is right. A Pentium M is the fastest CPU you can do as you cannot upgrade from a single core to a dual core CPU like the Core Duo. Likewise, another Celeron M wouldn't present a significant performance increase.

I would find out which i855 chipset you have. If you have integrated graphics then it is 855GM and discreet graphics most likely 855PM.

I have a DV1411SE which also originally came with a Celeron M at 1.4GHz and I upgraded to a Pentium M 745 at 1.8 GHz. This was the fastest chip listed in the DV1000 service manual, but I believe there were faster chips that were available and would probably be compatible. Nevertheless, at the time I did the upgrade the 1.8 GHz chip was significantly cheaper than the faster chips.

As namaiki said, make sure you get a CPU with 400MHz FSB.

EDIT: Commander Wolf's guide ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...tel-mobile-processor-compatibility-guide.html) lists the Pentium M 755 (2.0 GHz) and 765 (2.1 GHz) as being compatible. I haven't tried these myself so I can't say for sure but I suspect they would work (maybe need a BIOS update?). The 1.8 GHz chip worked with no issues on my computer and is still going strong.

Thank you all for the help. 2.0 or 2.1 would be fine. I think 600mhz and a larger cache would present a noticible performance increase. My mainboard is a 400mhz fsb, socket 479. problem is this;all the pentium m cpu's I have found 1.8 and higher that are socket 479 have the 533fsb and all the cpu's I have found with the 400mhz fsb are socket 478. Now that is crazy, right? unless, and I hope this does not sound too retarded, you can use the 533 chip in the 400mhz board or the socket 478 chip in a 479 socket. intellectually I realize that makes no sense, but since a 2.0ghz chip with a 533fsb can be had for 25 bucks I really want it to be. In answer to another poster's question, this unit has the integrated graphics chip. Oh, then I found this on wikipedia in the article about socket 479:
"Chipsets which employ this socket for the Pentium M are the Intel 855GM/GME/PM and Intel 915GM/GMS/PM. While the Intel 855GME chipset supports all Pentium M CPU's, the Intel 855GM chipset does not officially support 90 nm 2MB L2 cache (Dothan core) models (even though it works, it only works at 400FSB, some 3rd party/user was able to overclock the FSB on 855GM/GME/PM to support 533FSB Dothan Core).[3].. The other difference is the 855GM chipset gaphics core runs at 200 MHz while the 855GME is runs at 250 MHz."
ok, so mine is using the 855gme. does that mean I can drop in the 533mhz fsb chip and it will run at 400mhz? that doesnt sound right to me but if it works like that then great, cheap upgrade for me. if anyone can shed a bit more light, I may be able to get this project underway. thanks.

The 478/479 socket is the same. Just make sure you get a CPU that is PGA (has pins).

If you use a 533MHz bus CPU in your 400MHz chipset, the CPU will run as follows. Let's say the CPU is 2.0GHz when the bus is 533MHz; however since the bus on your laptop runs at 400MHz, the core speed that you will get on your laptop is in fact just 1.5GHz. If you can overclock back up or close to 533MHz, that is great. But you could first try that with the 1.4GHz Celeron M CPU that you currently have.

    You are all wrong.

There is a 945gm motherboard for this laptop. You can upgrade it to any socket M dual core processor if you want to go through with the motherboard upgrade.

You have to find the equivalent presario and compaq nx series model numbers and search by that on ebay.

or you can save your money and get a new laptop. Even if you upgrade , its not worth it. You're way better off getting a new laptop with much better specs. A i3 or i5 will be way better than any choice.
