    Hello,

I own dell 600m. I am confused these days between buying thinkpad T61P or upgrading my Dell 600m. I need help from friends in this forum.

I am thinking of installing new sata hard drive which spins at 7200 rpm and has data rate of 3GB/s. can i install this hard drive in my dell 600m ? is it compatible ?
I understand that maximum memory i can install in my Dell 600m is 2 GB. is that correct ? I have two 512 MB memory modules now in my Dell 600m. can i replace both of them with 1 GB with total of 2 GB for complete system.

Now second thought is if upgrading Dell 600m is worth it? I do not know if i really need Duo processor unless i can really write programs which can use parallelism of Duo. I am mainly interested in high speed hard drive and more memory which i assume will increase performance of laptop a lot ? can anyone please correct me here if i am wrong.

    regards,

No, you cannot put that hard drive in your machine. It needs to be an IDE/ATA hard drive, not SATA. But you can definitely find fast 7200rpm IDE drives.

And yes, you can put in 2gb of ram in there. With those upgrades, your laptop will really wake up and work much nicer.

Any hitachi or seagate 7200rpm drives will be perfect. Check out newegg or zipzoomfly, or tigerdirect for prices.

    Hello,

This is Richard from Dell's Online Community Outreach group. I just wanted to chime in with the 600m service manual. You will be able to view all the available hardware options from your computer. Plus, instructions on how install the hard drive.

The 7K100 100gb 7200rpm hitachi ata harddrive is the fastest ata notebook harddrive which will fit in your laptop. It will run you about $90-95 on newegg

    Hi,

I upgraded now. I installed my 100GB 7200 RPM hard drive and 2 GB memory

Now i am having another issue

I installed windows XP Pro on new hard drive and trying to set up drivers etc. on my new installation of windows XP Pro.

I have Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Installed in my laptop and i downloaded latest drivers from intel website as well as dell website and installed drivers as well as utilities. My wireless card can see all wireless connections but when i try to connect to my wireless connection ( it is secure and i entered KEY properly )
    , it does not connect.

    what could be wrong ?

    Hi Crazy_jutt,

I am going to purchase the the same ram and hard drive you did. It sounds like the hard drive replacement and clean install is not all sunshine and puppies. I will be posting my own questions (If I can find anything that resembles "post new question Here" )because I have a problem to address first.

    Good Luck,

    Charquat

Wireless: uninstall Dell's wireless utility and use windows' own one. I did that with a friend's insiron 6400 and the wireless connected straight away.
