Did you buy the 40 gig new? Is the same specs roughly as the old?

yep, i did not buy it new though. i bought it off ebay. The person said it was pulled form a working laptop and he just bought it this april. i have the receipts. what's wrong with it =\ the specs are an upgrade 5400rpm vs the old 4200 rpm... it can't even see it in the bios. he said it was gov't wiped... not sure what that means.

I would check to make sure its mounted into the caddy correctly and securely in place. Look to be certain that the connector is connected. If you want to check if its dead, you could try it in another notebook or buy or borrow a USB enclosure and plug it into that and then plug that into a working computer.

Did you buy a SATA by accident mabye?
