I know that not all hard drive have the value that they say they have for example my 80g hard drive is really 76g
However should there be this much of a difference Most of the time I see only by at most 1 g .
does this mean my hard drive has bad sectors

no, that's normal. the bigger the hdd, the bigger the discrepancy between advertised and actual size. for example, my 160gb hdd is really only 154gb and my 250 is only 233.

The equation is basically this.
In computer terms 1GB=1024MB
In manufacturer's terms 1GB=1000MB
So in turn 80GB manufacturers terms into computer terms is 78.125GB.
Also if it is direct from say Dell/HP or a company like that. Some have a hidden 2GB partition for system recovery.
That would explain the extra missing space.

Thanks for filling in the equations -- I knew it was something like that, but I couldn't quite remember.
The cache also comes out of the total hdd size, but since that'll only be 2-16megs, it's not a very noticable portion missing.
