I want to upgrade a 100gig 7200 rpm drive to either the 320gig 5400rpm samsung or the 200 gig hitachi travelstar which is the fastest or most energy efficinet drive and can achronis or casper cloning software transfer the os image via a usb cable or how is that done and what complete hardware should be purchased to do that?????

I've moved this to the hardware section. You should get more responses there.

If your 100gb drive is based off of the 7k200 series than you will not notice any performance increase by upgrading to the two platter 200gb 7k200 drive.
However if the drive you have is an older 7k100 100gb drive or a 100gb momentus, than upgrading to either drive will give a nice performance increase.

Just make sure that you buy a SATA based notebook drive.

I dont know if you can use achronis through USB, you may have to use a desktop (with sata connectors) in order to clone the operating system from the old drive to the new one.

edkemm, on your drive choice: I don't know whether you are aware of the existence of 320GB 7200RPM drives. You can get WD, Hitachi or Seagate. They will (most likely) be faster than the drives you mentioned.

I can confirm what K-Tron said about 7K200.

On Acronis: yes you can transfer the image through usb to an external harddrive. Acronis was recommended to me a year ago on these forums and I am now a big fan of their software.
