microsoft finally included hardware-accelerated h264 codecs with windows 7. the problem is that when playing certain h264 files, the output is garbage!
if you have win7 and you want to see the "garbage" output prevalent especially for ati and intel cards look and see if yours will output the quantum of solace trailer will output correctly.

It's probably to do with DXVA and the video profile. I would totally download that file right now, but my internet down speed is 64kilobits/s.
-
I'm running a 16Mbit/s lol. -
haha.. it's usually 8Mbit/s, but I've gone over my 60GB monthly download limit. There will be just another 9 days of this. :/
-
Even in Windows XP and Vista many files will look bad with DXVA enabled on Intel X4500 HMD.
Disabling DXVA gives much better image quality but also high CPU load.
More info in this thread. -
but my point is that nvidia cards can view this thing without the garbage output, with dxva on. from what i've researched, ati cards with avivo cannot use dxva for h264 encoded in level 5.1
the issue is that ati can enable this through software the same way nvidia didnt have the capability to play this until a software update. -
omg i recently installed windows 7 on a lenovo sl400 with a 4500mhd graphics chipset and what do you know, it decodes the l5.1 sample clip correctly where ati chips simply crap out
i was really surprised by this and ati should really go and fix their drivers to support this. i mean even intel supports this. -
It usually looks bad (missed frames) on 4500hmd with hardware acceleration. -
cant seem to find bourne supremacy on list but ultimatum is on list, tried it and it didnt have any of the dropped frames or anything
my ati 3200 also played it along with my desktop.
so the problem with the l5.1 on the james bond trailer still prevails on ati products while absent on nvidia and even intel products
again playback tests performed on h264 built-in codecs from win7 and drivers for intel were obtained via windows update on an lenovo sl400
also tested on tx2500z with ati 3200hd and desktop with 4650 and desktop with 8600gts. only ati fails the quantum of solace test provided above -
@ gekk_gad
what program/codecs are you playing the clip with? I suppose you're using Windows Media Player and that 'Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder'? -
clip is played using the h264 codec included with windows 7 so whatever that is. i also tried playing using the casimir666 codec that was included with mpc-hc and the same results, ati products display garbage while both nvidia and intel shows the right thing.
i assume that the h264 codec with windows 7 is hardware accelerated given that even at 500mhz (on battery), my ati 3200hd on tablet only uses 10-20% cpu playing a 1080p clip such as the quantum of solace from above, which shows crap. intel 4500mhd on battery still shows correctly while having a low cpu usage as well. -
What CPU are you playing it with Intel 4500 and what is the CPU load?
Is DXVA enabled? -
cpu load of intel 4500 (lenovo sl400) is within 7-19%
dxva is enabled since i'm using windows 7 built-in codecs
also tried casimir666 codecs which are also dxva and shows very similar results.
cpu load for ati 3200 is 10-20% with same codec setup as the intel setup
cpu load for ati 4650 on desktop is from 8-15% with same setup as the intel setup
and here is the playing screen when viewed using either ati products, it doesnt really matter which one, again this is for the quantum of solace trailer in the first post played with the dxva codecs from microsoft on windows 7
both an nvidia desktop (8600gts) and my intel 4500 on sl400 with drivers from windows update played it flawlessly and with dxva.
if anyone has the time and an ati-based setup with windows 7 can verify this using the file on the first post (quantum of solace trailer) that they also get a garbage output i'd really like to hear from you. btw for the more technical specs of the ati products i tested, the 3200 hd has UVD+ while the 4650 has a UVD2. -
And you are 100% sure every frame in the Bourne Ultimatum gets displayed properly? It would really surprise me.
What CPU do you have in your SL400?
Thanks by the way. -
yes, 100% sure on the bourne ultimatum on the sl400,
later i will again test the same video to make sure it was correct but as far as i can tell, there were no dropped frames and no artifacts
cpu is an intel t6500
hardware acceleration fail for ati/win7
