Heys guys, still using an older Toshiba Satelite 4100xdvd, got kids. The info on my laptop says it will handle up to 192 ? mb memory card, think its only using a 64, no where I can still get a bigger one. It runs just fine, just slow compared to the desktop of course but looks brand new. Runnig xp home on the original 6.49gb hard drive, hope to change it soon to one thats large in size with a faster rotation. Can some one help me find a few necessary things to help give it a boost. thanks in advance. 2008brand

64 mb? You mean ram? I thought 256 was hell. To be honest, I'd recommend upgrading..........finding ram for something that old won't be cheap, and it won't add any significant performance.........just get an inspiron 1525 from dell outlet or something with a celeron and 2gb ram at least. I'd die using that. lol

yes dude I mean ram, I already have 3 running desktops in my house but this is my laptop!!!!!!!!! I know it sounds ubsurd, got any kids??? Their worse on Computers than flat tires on a dragster. I know I can still get the 128 mb ram, just wanting to know if anyone ever heard of a 192. It only hold one card, unlike the newer cards. Ever seen A 6 year old dump a bowl of ice cream on a keyboard, I keep a new spare just incase.

You might as well let the kids destroy that old one before dropping the money for a replacement :).

That laptop has only one RAM slot (which should be unoccupied) and then 64 MB of built in RAM. So you'll want one 128MB module. (That will give you the total possible in that laptop, which is 192MB.)

To be honest, that laptop is so old I'm not sure what you'll be able to get. Click here to do Crucial's 'system scan' to get info on what type of RAM you will need for it:

    http://crucial.com/systemscanner/

I imagine it takes an old SODIMM module. PC133 I'd guess. Still, run the test to be sure.

(A word of warning, the older modules tend to be more expensive than new ones. So this might be an expensive upgrade.)

I have found a 128 on ebay, not as bad price wise as you might think tho. And the kids can't have my computer yet either. I do a lot of custom body work on motorhomes and its full of my photos. It works well for me in the shop when I am showing clients other work without having to going back in the oofice and get on the server. That d$%& things worse than my laptop....... I firgure on keeping this till next year and then buy a NEW hp. but I like how the toshiba keyboard is better. Do have another questions tho?

the green stuff is not your operating system. It is your systems virtual memory.

It is okay if it moves from part of the drive to another part of the drive.

I think it is a good idea to upgrade the system

I actually have the same laptop at home and it works great to this day

It has 128mb of Pc66 memory installed.
It is possible to install 196mb of memory.
The system actually has 64mb of memory built into the main board.
If you remove the battery and than remove the one screw which holds the memory cover open, you will find one memory card. Probably made by Apple memory in Germany like mine is.
You can remove that memory card and the system will run without it.

If you have 64mb of memory now, you most likely do not have any memory actually in that slot.
So if you want you can buy a 64mb or 128mb card to put into that slot.
However that memory is not standard, and will be very hard to find.

I have a 64mb card from mine, if you want I can tell you the model number so you can know exactly what memory to purchase.

These old machines are picky with memory, so do not just buy ordinary ram, cause it will not work.

Also please do not upgrade the harddrive. Dont.
I tried on mine, and the system will not recognize any drive other than the harddrive it came with.

Yeah like everybody else said I think you would better served just getting a new or a used one. In the long run you will probably have to buy a new one anyway so by upgrading you pretty much be flushing money down the drain.

    Thats not what I said.
Actually that Toshiba laptop is built extremely well. It has taken over 12 yrs of beating and working, and a few drops here and their and it still runs. The battery on mine still works after 12 yrs, which no laptop on todays market could ever live up to.
Its a great system, and its worth a few $$$ to fix it up.

This laptop was basically the reason why Toshiba is known for extremely durable laptops.

Thanks guys for all your input, guess I will just keep using this one until next year. Lest Santa brings me a newer one, hahahahahahaha. Oops I'm santa, dang I hat e that. I have looked and the laptop I have already has a memeory card installed, I also notice a difference when I am the only one on the internet. But my biggest draw back is the lack of space to run some of the photo shop programs I use on the desktop I already built. My wife loves that computer and would kill me if I tried to take it over. I bumped the hd to 250 from 80 and we currently have over 1000 photos on it, 3 dozen vidoes and over 120 full cd's, its all hp except the seagate barricuda hd. Maxd ram and all the burners i could shove in it. Thing gets pretty hot when converting 8mm film to dvd video. Which do you guys think makes a better product now? Toshiba or Hp in a laptop. It will have to run xp as I don't really know enough about vista, and most of the software I use ,vidoe adaptors etc. are made for xp. I am quite capable of make one upgraded. I have done about 4 or 5 for my family but not anything real new. I would be looking for system speed, hard drive space, and excellent video. also need higher speed usb ports and more of them. AAAAny suggestions where to start?

If you are looking for a solid notebook to upgrade to, look at the business machines, Lenovo Thinkpads, Dell Latitudes, and HP's business line.

Those are the best built machines now, and the general concensus is in that order, with Lenovo being the best, very, very closely followed by Dell and HP.

I wouldnt stick with Hp for laptops.
For laptops, definitely go a Dell Vostro or Latitude line. The dell ones are business grade and are made out of stronger plastics than even the thinkpads. Lenovo would be a second for durability.
Toshiba lost a lot of its durability over the years.

Actually even the most durable laptops on the market today will not even come close to the quality of your old Toshiba
    Trust me on that.

Right now, the Vostro and Latitude line have the strongest chassis, than come the lenovo business line, and than hp's business line after that. Unless you consider the Panasonic Toughbook. That thing is built like a tank, and is designed not to break, but it is slow and expensive

Other than that, keep the Satellite as a backup, I am sure it will last another 10yrs.

I double checked on my satellite.
I have a 32mb card in the memory slot, and it is Pc66 memory.
The maximum memory support for that slot is 128mb, so the 128mb plus the 64mb onboard yields 196mb

Do you know that satellite was the first laptop to ever have a dvd drive?

is dell paying you something .. because my GFs Latitude D630 cant come even close to the durability of my T61. Everytime I open her display I feel that it will break apart, just like my old HP laptop.

and why are you comparing the plastics of both laptops when one of um has a metal roll cage and the other one doesnt ? .. come on now :p

I say this because it has been proven that latitude and vostro laptops are more durable than almost every laptop, and have higher quality than even the old thinkpads.
I do not make this stuff up. Lots of members here can say the same.
The quality of plastics in the vostro and latitude lines are much better than most plastic laptops.
The lenovo may have a magnesium shell, but believe me it breaks just as a plastic one does
I go to school with every student using a lenovo T61 and there are many students who walk around with dented and warped machines.
The computing center repairs and replaces hundreds of T61's for cracking plastic underbody's so lenovo isnt that great after all.
You may have a T61, but the plastic around the palmrest is really weak and the whole bottom shell is rather poorly made.
The lid is well made on the T61, but the rest leaves much to be desired. I own a T61 cause I won it free from scholarship, I know the system inside and out.
