We'd need to know what type of laptop you have first. Some laptops have specs that can be exceeded but it depends on what type of laptop it is and the hardware it uses.

Some Hard Drives are specific to certain systems. I've got a smiliar spec Dell Inspiron 8100, and you can only upgrade the HDD to an 80Gb 5400 rpm drive. Currently, I have just a 40Gb HDD.
That 30GB HDD for your gateway maybe the only one suitable for that particular system.
In desktops, you can upgrade to any size of HDD as they are all a universal size and are NOT system specific. The only thing that limits what HDD you want to stick in a desktop is the connection type. The old IDE connections will not support newer SATA drives. The same case with laptops. -
I'm thinking that the reason it will only accept 30gb is, its a P3 and if I recall correctly, 30 gb was the biggest drive available back then. Another possible limitation is the bios might only recognize up to 30 gb. This might be fixed by a bios update. Also, if it loaded with win98 and WinMe, I think 40gb is the biggest partitions they recognize. An easy fix is to upgrade to WinXP or just partition it into 2 drives.
I may be wrong but I think you can upgrade it to a bigger drive. -
ill have a go at updating stuff bios ect when i get it thanx for the info was very helpfull
