the headphones on my laptop keep cutting out and switching to the speakers. i have tried multiple different headphones and the same problem arises with all of them. i was wondering if there is a way to turn off the speakers entirely on windows vista. any suggestions?

Seems like your headphone jack is worn out or just loose. Are you able to bend back any pins to tighten the connection?
Depending on what audio software you have installed, you may or may not be able to control this manually.
I think this is a hardware problem though.
Good luck. -
is there any software i could download in order to turn off the speakers? all i have is the default currently.

Sorry, none that I know of.
Did you look in the Volume options and/or the Control Panel for additional Audio options?
Which is your default? -
i did look in the control panel, but you couldn't alter the settings. as to the default I'm not sure what it is, but i think that you might be right in that it is a hardware problem. do you know how i could take off the bottom to adjust the jack without harming the computer?

You should just need a screwdriver or two and some patience - but I don't even know what notebook you have.
But as a general overview:
Shut down Windows (don't sleep or hibernate the system).
Remove the power plug from the notebook.
Remove the battery from the notebook.
Take computer apart slowly and methodically with lots of light and room to work in.
Also; Don't rub your feet on the carpet while doing the above. -

First, you should double click on volume control, go to options > advanced. Then check all of the options under "playback" and click OK.
One of these sliders may be able to control your speaker volume separately. If it is a hardware problem however, then you wont hear anything in the times that it was cutting to speaker before.
