    Hi,
    I own a Dell Inspiron 8500 with a Geforce go 4200 64MB.

I've read that it's possible to swap it with an Ati Radeon 9600 pro turbo 128MB. I've found a site that sells this Card (Dell doesn't want to sell it to me), but I am afraid of the extra heat this card produces.

I've found a way to modify the radeon, but I was wondering if it is really necessary to fiddle with the card when I don't intend to overclock it... Will my motherboard overheat when I use the card normally? Does anyone have any experience with this?

    Thanx!

ok, i've found the answer. It's YES!!

The BIOS of the 8500 is not the same as the one of the 8600, and it shuts down faster when there is more heat...

    So modding it is...[ :)]

I have performed this mod myself, so just ask if you have any questions.

    Thanks Andrew.

First, I have to get my hands on one of those radeons...
Let's hope Dell wants to sell me one, otherwise I'll have to order one in the States... And I'm not very comfortable ordering in the States when I'm living in Belgium...[8)]

btw, why did you apply the mod when you have an 8600?

The Bios can handle the extra heat on it's own, no?

the laptop never overheated to the point of shutdown. The core speed would just go to 100 degrees celcius and stay there. I modded it down to 75 degrees so i could overclock it.

Yeah, I tried on 4 different ocassions with dell spare parts and they would not sell me an ATI MR9600, either. I got mine on ebay, as well. Just finished installing it with the new ATI drivers from Dell. This card performs waaaaay better than my old Nvidia GeForce FX Go5200, duh.

Played Halo for the past hour on medium settings . . . Great! Now, I'll switch to higher settings and see. Have fangui on and set to fast, fast.
    No problems, thus far.

    Enjoy your new ATI card!

The notebook's graphics card normally reaches 200 degrees fahrenheit during heavy load. It usually does not affect stability, just overclocking headroom.
