i recently slammed my laptop (dell latitude d620) pretty hard because I tripped... it didn't fall.. it just hit pretty bad. anyway it was on so something went bad. I opened the lid to see if everything was okay and it was, but when I opened my explorer i got a blue screen (the one that says dumping physical memory to disk) and I waited like 30 minutes and shut down the computer (is this bad?). then I restarted my computer and not to my surprise, windows refused to boot (it stayed at the bootscreen). I waited about 5 minutes and then restarted again.. This time at about 2 minutes it went through chdsk which it's doing right now.

Can someone diagnose the problem? Did I scratch the harddrive? CHDSK is giving me about 50 unreadable file "segments"... Help!

EDIT: i do haev a warranty, but I just want to know if my data is okay..

UPDATE: chdsk is done.. now it goes in an endless loop of dell bootscreen -> windows bootscreen -> blue screen

i would suggest reseating your ram and checking to see that the hd is properly attached.

What you can you do is by a 2.5 inch HD enclosure and take the HD out of your notebook. Then you can hook the enclosure up to a PC and try to put the data on the PC's HD. After you have rescued the data from the notebook HD, put the HD back in your notebook and send it Dell to have them fix it.

Best guess is you cracked or scratched a platter on the HDD, they generally don't take too well to body slams. If you're under warranty, don't crack open the case. Just send it in to Dell and they will diagnose your problem and replace your HDD. Probably won't have to pay for it, unless physical abuse to the affected components is pretty evident.

my notebook has the "strikezone" hdd, i'd expect it to be a bit tougher, the slam wasn't that hard, and it didn't hit at a sharp angle.. if I were to estimate, it would be equivalent to dropping the notebook about 2 inches from the ground and parallel.

the warranty covers everything, a friend that had the same warranty dropped his on the floor from 4 feet or so and they replaced it np.

i'll look into your suggestion jedisolo

    thanks!

Can you boot into Safe Mode? Press F8 on startup and then select "Safe Mode."
