Reformat it and reinstall XP and upgrade to 512GB of ram (which is the max. it supports according to THIS website). That would be good for most if not all Internet browsing activities, e-mail checking and the like.

Wow your friend just gave it to you for free? Thats cool, I would love to play with the old Thinkpads. It is still usable. Max the memory out by buying some on ebay and then drop the largest IDE harddrive(I think it uses IDE not SATA) in there and that should be a good start. Format the drive and put Linux on there. It should be great.

well you shant upgrade that harddrive too much, cause that system most likely supports a maximum of ata 4-5 so the max harddrive bandwidth will be around 25mb/sec, which is pretty slow.
You can upgrade the harddrive, but I wouldnt go with anything fancy, cause it wont be able to make use of the faster IDE/PATA/ATA laptop harddrives.

The system, will also have LBA issues, and will not recognize a drive more than 137Gb, so dont get a harddrive with more than 100gb capacity, just to be safe.
My brother had a Pentium 3 laptop and it only recognized around 75 gb max, so you may not want to upgrade the harddrive that much.

Also the memory may be expensive to buy new, but I am sure people around here have some they can give away or for pretty cheap.

I have a lot of 64mb sodimm's which will work in your system, but they are the same size as the ones you currently have.

Install XP on it, dont force vista on it, cause it will run slow as hell with vista.

To the OP, .Vista shouldn't even be a thought w/ that laptop. XP will run fine w/ it upgraded. Or Linux too I guess, if you're into that, as fire snake recommended.

1- ebay is a good place for the ram but you have to be careful. Your laptop uses SDram and this type or RAM is picky. They hae incompatibility issues.
So buy from someone who guarantes that his ram is compatible with the T22 or that he pulled it out from a T22.

2- 512mb will give you more flexibility that 256mb

3- faster IDE harddrive will give a major performance boost. Buy one with 5400rpm.

4- Linux is good but you may have trouble to run some of you favorit applications.
You could try nLite to make your own version of XP. I tried it in several computers and I'm happy with the result

    download nLite from here:
    www.nliteos.com

    nLite tutorial(s) here:
    http://teamtutorials.com/windows-tutorials/how-to-make-a-custom-windows-install-w-nlite

    On a Twinhead VX, Pentium 2 300mhz, 128mb and 6gb HDD:
Windows XP nLited = about 50 seconds boot time
Ubantu 6.06 = about 50 seconds boot time (but no 1024x786 screen res)
Ubuntu 8.04 = about 2 minutes boot time (but no sound)

Performance-wise Win 2000 and XP are the same.

nLite is the way to go.
