I am going to buy a mydigitalssd from http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/Cat...te+Disk+Drives or a samsung hm160hc
    very soon.

I'm just wondering should I go for a 16gb mlc 120/30 (read/write) for $120 or an 8gb slc 130/70 for $160 or the 160gb hm160hc rated at 50/50 for $100? What would be the difference in boot times/ performance etc... between the three? whatever I go for I want it to be much cooler than the 100gb 5400rpm st9100824a hd I have now
    thanks

Did you read the SSD Thread? If my memory is correct, MLC is quite slow, particularly for writing. The low cost SSDs tend to be relatively slow. Some of the Seagate HDDs tend to be quite power hungry. I would tend to go for the Samsung 160HC.

hmm... I posted the read/ write speeds above for comparison of an mlc one and an slc one. I watched a video of a mydigitalssd 32gb mlc boot xp in 20 seconds on youtube.
Any other suggestions on which one to buy?

Those startup times may be for a bare Windows installation. You can't compare it with your present setup since the boot time gets longer after installing applications.

Read this Anandtech report for some comparisons. I think that Transcend SSD is MLC. The HM160HC should be at least as fast as the 7200.2 in that test. See the result in this thread.
