I built my own external HD today and I can't seem to get it show up on my computer. It is a SATA hard drive with an enclosure that supports it and translate it to USB 2.0 for my computer. When I turn the HD on it makes that beep so I know that it is connected to my computer. Under "MY COMPUTER" I don't see a external hd popping out.

Under "COMPUTER MANAGEMENT - DISK MANAGEMENT" I see this...

Does anyone know what I should do?

Have you tried right-clicking on the partition map (RHS where it mentions the size in GB) and selecting format?

Still, it's unusual... I thought drives came preformatted.

Yea I right clicked on it and it was grayed out. So do you think after formatting it it will work?

Your guess is as good as mine, I'm afraid... I don't use XP much, mainly OS X and linux. I know a format is usually the first thing I do under those OSs though.

I had a problem like this once. I think I used HD software (something like Partition Magic, but I don't think that's the one) to fix it. Try formatting first. It so much eaiser

That's the thing...I can't seem to format it. I think I do need some HD software like Partition Magic.

If you have access to a desktop that is the easiest way to format it. When I get new externals thats what I always do.

Just plug it into the desktop and partition and format with the disk management utility.
