performance wise... how much better does the Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 2.53G compare to Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26G.

The T9400 is faster and has a bigger L2 Cashe but sucks more battery power.

But you won't really notice any difference unless in benchmark testings
And the P8400 uses less power which means longer battery life

nah not really... you do notice a difference when you are multitasking and/or using processor intensive task... like err... your program start up faster.

i plan to buy a new computer and i want it to last around 3 yrs. is the P8400 good to keep for that long or is wiser to get the T9400 since its a newer model.

but a lot of programs don't even use/need that many GHz to start up, having more GHz won't make the program start up any faster.. But yeah I agree it will help when you're multitasking.. i think

If you want it to be more "future proof" and money and battery life isn't really a problem for you, then I think you should go ahead and get the T9400
But the difference should be small, in my opinion

Ultimately depends on what you're doing with it. For general productivity tasks even last generation chips in the T7000 series are overkill, but if you're going to be doing a lot of CPU intensive tasks, you may see a significant difference between the P8400 and the T9400. You can get the P8400 now and upgrade to the T9400 when prices drop if you feel that the P8400 is inadequate.

The P9400, by the way, isn't really a "newer" chip. It's a more capable chip that uses a bit more power, but fundamentally the same as the P8400.

the graphics card and the processors are really tearing me apart.

the 9700m gt is supposed to be a good graphics card but i dont know if i want to get the laptop with that processor. hmm im stuck!

the T9400 has a NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GS

    and the

P84 has NVIDIA GeForce 9700M GT

I would say go with the P8400 with NVIDIA GeForce 9700M GT..
the difference between the cpu's aren't really that noticeable when you're doing 3d stuff
    it's the gpu that matters
    in my opinion..
