i am going to get a dell laptop and the only question that i need answered is about the cpu. i have used both types of cpu's in laptops and desktops; i know they are both of good quality. it is a 2 tiered question, so here goes.

    1) which cpu (intel duo vs amd thurion 64) operates at a cooler temperature under normal use? internet, email, some digital photos.

    2) will a faster cpu operate cooler under normal use, or will a slower cpu operate cooler under normal use? does the faster cpu get hotter because it is faster?

Well notebook CPU's are designed to operate very cool, so its a close call, and really doesnt matter very much. As for your second question, it really just depends on the CPU, but a higher clock speed certainly can make it a few degrees warmer. A T5500 vs T7600 you would probably see this difference.
Just so ya know, Intel is recommended nowadays. The core 2 duo is 64 bit, dual core, and faster. The turion
is a single core and slower. So Intel kinda wins that contest.

core 2 duo is easily better than amd turion 64
the turion 64 had surpassed the pentium m but the inter core processor isnt as good as the amd core processor

a core processor will definately operate cooler than an amd...........and i dont think that the different clock speeds of a processor do really make a significant difference in the working temperatures

1.) intel chips run cooler at the moment. It won't make a HUGE difference--i've found that the hard drive produces the most heat, at least in the notebooks that i've owned. You shouldn't worry too much about heat. It also depends heavily on what kind of cooling/fan setup the notebook has.
2.) If the processor is from the same family (architecture/nm process, etc) it should run at the same temperatures no matter which processor. They all use the same voltages. If there is a difference it will not be significant.

I think both processors rock! for me I always like to buy low end notebooks and amds seem to always have the better IGP at a cheaper price they might not have as fast of a cpu but the better card more then makes up for that. if you go for the high end then it makes sense to go intel unless you can afford a alienware with the FX60 then I would probably pick amd.

The dual-core Turion is called the Turion X2. It is easily outperformed by the Core 2 Duo, although it is certainly no slouch and most users won't notice much of a difference.

Note that mobile processors do not run at their full clockspeed unless it is necessary; Intel Core 2 Duo processors clock down to 1.0GHz and AMDs go down to a similar speed (can't remember the exact frequency) for most tasks.

Whether or not the laptop runs hot depends on the laptop itself, not only the processor.
If you are considering the Dell 1501 - don't. It's a ripoff compared to the E1505, which costs only slightly more yet has a lot more features:

For mainstream CPU's the Core and Core 2 will pretty much wipe the floor of the Turion.... It pains me to say that as an AMD fanboi, but it's true... But in the case of Celeron vs Semperon, the Semperon will be much nicer than the Celeron.

The AMD's run at 787mhz at idle, if anyone really cares.I would say to go with the Intel if you plan on playing games/ multimedia work, otherwise go with the AMD, I have not noticed a difference between mine and my friends he is running a 1.66ghz Core 2 Duo expect in games, but he is running an x1800 256mb, so I don't feel that bad.

Anything dealing with computers is "right now". Right now, Core 2 Duo blows everything away. Probably for the foreseeable future too. I think AMD got caught with it's pants down on this one. Every benchmark review of Core 2 was surprised how badly AMD got beat. AMD will be back but I think it's going to take them longer to match Intel this time around.

:D i want to thank all of you for your replies. i hope that the answers may help someone else to make a decision, as buying a computer is a major investment for me. now, for the good news. i ordered a dell 1505 with a T2050 and 2gb of memory. it will suit my purposes just fine, and then some. also, i found a coupon which gives a 25% discount if you buy with dell financing for 12 months interest free! my wife has an account with dell for her desktop and after contemplating for a couple of hours, it got ordered. again, thanks a lot and have a happy and holy Christmas. Peace and God bless.

    POW/MIA.......never forget, never again!
