right ive been thinking. (ok its dangerous hobby i know)
but what with most onboard graphics cards having the bga memory soldered onto the boards them selves has anyone though of experimenting with removing the correct memory type and size from a compatiple desktop gfx card donor and removing the memory chips from the laptop using a special (cool) iron with a solder sicker. lets say for example my raddy 9700m is 64mb now what if i wanted to do a self upgrade this way in theory all I need do is flash the onboard gfx bios to a raddy 9700m 128mb remove the laptop casing ect to get to the bga memory for the GPU then carefully solder suck them off then carefully solder the donated mem chips back on from the reverse side of the board using a copper sink to prevent thermal damage to the memory.
ive thought this through now before anyone tells me that its impossible let me just inform you that I am very electrically and mecanically minded and I work with aircraft avionics in the Royal Air Force.
i even did the Blue toothmod on my acer before even looking here using a mini usb dongle soldered to the expansion wire on my note book just beside the synaptic pad.
anyhoo what you chaps think ?
there is a possiblity of this going wrong but what i can see causing the most damage is the soldering iron going through the pcb specially if its a multy layer type []

I guess it should work.
But don't BGA memory chips have pins/connectors on most of their bottom area. How do you intend to make sure that all the connectors will hit their target on the mobo? And avoid any cross overs and short circuiting. If you have a work around that it should work.
I can send you my bios in case you don't find one on the net, although I don't think it should be that dificult to find one. Back in the days when I was still a nut case and used to find it a hobby to mess around with GFX cards and their bioses I never had a problem finding tons of bioses online []

yeah well bga are odd little chips what im hoping for that once the solders been sucked the will be enough clearence to re solder them back on and that the pins arnt surface soldered cos that will get fiddley [

obviously i would mark the board so that I am always aware of the chips orentation
but at the end of the day you gotta have hands like a surgeons to do this lol
but there are soldering rigs that can help
