So weeks ago when playing Oblivion or TF2, I remember my max GPU temperature going up to around 82C according to rivatuner after playing for 5 minutes. Now, temperatures are going up to 87 88 Celsius. At one point, it got so hot that my laptop shut down by itself. What happened to my computer? (could it be that its heating more because I'm playing on a different surface?)

edit: my computer is a sager np2096 with Intel p8600, Nvidia 9600m GT and 4 GB Ram.

Well, what were the different surfaces?

Clean out the fans and heatsinks of dust, and if possible, you might want to look at reapplying thermal paste. Not to say that you have to do that, but it may help.

    oh sorry, I forgot, it's a 9600M GT from a sager np2096.

I don't think the fan has stopped working because I can still hear the fan.

make sure the fan is working. your notebook has several fans, you may only hear other ones. if it's working then you can troubleshoot other problems.

I second the dust suggestion. You would be SHOCKED at how quickly dust can accumulate, especially if you ever set your notebook down on a soft surface (carpet, bed, etc). Dust does not conduct heat very well.

Try opening up the bottom case / service panel to where you can see the heatsinks and/or radiators and heatpipes (depending on what your laptop uses). Do you see dust?

more than one fan? now I'm really worried that a fan might have died. How do I check that? I'm also worried about opening my notebook because I might mess something up.

You won't if you are careful. I've removed the hard drive of my notebook several times, and I've never damaged it.

don't worry.. just have the service manual which u can get from the support site next to u to show how to disassemble the laptop... also if u don't want to go through all the trouble , go to your BIOS and ensure your fans are always on option is ticked... that will keep ur temps down...
