For those who have this HD, how loud is it? I could hear my over my laptop fan, lapcooler 3 and the ps2 fan when they are all beside me, is my drive dead or is this normal?

That seems loud. Ask them to send you a new one.

What sort of noise it. whining noise all the time, or grinding noise when reading?

Get some software that can detect problems thru S.M.A.R.T. like HD tune.
and if you go to hitachi's site they have a utility that u can run from a cd on boot to scan for problems ( http://www.hitachigst.com/warranty/jsp/arma22h.jsp)

If you can hear it over all that, then there's a problem. Definitely get it replaced - you shouldn't hear it.

I ran the hitachi drive fitness test and it shows no error, is the drive really dying? I heard some people say that hitachi hd are louder than normal.

Is this a 1.8" or 2.5" drive? I've heard complaints over noise levels on the 1.8" Hitachis in the IBM/Lenovo forum and elsewhere, but not on the 2.5"ers.

I have a desktop Hitachi Deskstar that has been making terrible noise since day one and has been working flawlessly for 3-4 years now. But I haven't heard noisy laptop drives. And I have Hitachis in both my laptops. Doesn't sound normal to me. Even if it's not dying, perhaps you can get it replace just on account of the annoying and unusual noise.
