Not bad, the 180$ one from newegg or somewhere else?
-
Pretty good but oddly enough, i've seen some benchmarks for a 320gig 7200rpm hdd averaging ~69mb/s... sorry i don't have a link but it was on nbr.
-
It seems like your drive's latency (yellow) is sort of high. I thought I got ~14ms with Hitachi 7K160s in my Toshiba.

Nice drive. How are the noise and vibration?
Here's someone elses 7K320 HD Tune result.

Are you running XP or Vista? -

I agree that the latency looks high. My Fujitsu 320GB 5400rpm gets 17.2ms.
I would have expected a bigger difference. Perhaps there have been compromises such as interleaving in order to read the data density at 7200rpm.

Please tell us, how is the vibration and noise?
I was thinking of getting one yesterday, but decided to wait for the Seagate Momentus 7200.3 to come out to market. -
i ordered the 7k320 travelstar from https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Hitachi/0A57547/ , I guess there is a $30 rebate on it, It is definately is a little bit louder of a whine when it spins full speed compared to the 7k200 that i replaced it with but it doesnt bother me and i've only heard it ramp up like that a couple times and i did a fresh install of xp and returned my system back completely, there is a little bit more vibration than the 7k200 but i guess that is to be expected when you have more mass spinnin at 7200rpm. Now all i need to do is get this external esata enclosure to be recognised with my 7k200 in it and everything would be great. One thing i did notice is i dont hear the heads parkin so much as i used to on the 7k200. As for the 40 C that is a little warm but i was in the middle of transfering a bunch of movies and finishing up my conversion when i ran the test. All in all i am pleased so far with the upgrade, better performance and more space i cant complain and soon i will have super fast transfers between hdd's with esata so it is a win win win. I did see the hdtune test for the seagate and wd versions and i wish the score's for hitachi were a little more comperable, but i think hitachi's hdd's are top notch and i havent had any problems with there hdd's berfore. So, so far so good i am happy

meat curtain master, would you run PC Mark 05 for us?
It will give a XP Startup performance number and a general usage HDD number. I'd really like to know how this drive compares to 7K200 in real life benchmarks.

I'm still on the fence about this cause of vibration issue. I think i'm also going to wait for some reviews on the Seagate. And i'm still considering just doing with the 7k200
-
I was actually going to purchase one at the exact same place as the OP. Cancelled my order though. My current lappy drive, Samsung 250GB w/Free Fall Sensor 7200RPM does not make any noise whatsoever. I can't feel any vibrations from my M1530 nor hear any sort of sound whether it be whirring, parking, or whatnot.
I think I will just go ahead and wait for the Seagate Momentus 7200.3 when it comes out within about 2-3 weeks. -
INEEDMONEY Homicidal Teddy Bear
But what if the Seagate reports similar problems?
-
Seagates are already out for manufacturers, just not retail. Dell has the option available in all of their laptops as well as ACER or ASUS I believe.
Based on reviews I have read as well as user experiences, the Seagate Momentus 7200.3 is much quieter and is practically dead silent and no vibration is felt during usage. No clicking noises come out of it. Though the hitachi performs slightly better, the Seagate is lighter and makes less noise.
The only problem is? The Hitachi 320 7k200 is available for retail, the Seagate Momentus 7200.3 is not.
If you really really value that marginal performance increase with hitachi, you'll have to sacrifice noise, vibration, and weight.
I think the minimal ever so slight decrease in performance with the Seagate... its worth waiting for. -
While the 320GB deliver higher transfer rates, the 7K200 has lower acces times. I am very curious how they will compare in benchmarks that simulate normal usage.
Maybe the 7K200 is a better deal than most people believe. -
Screw the 7k200. Were talking about the 7k320 vs the Seagate Momentus which is also 320GB 7200RPM. Obviously there is lower access times because there is a lower amount of data. Thats like saying a 4GB 7200RPM drive has faster access times than a 200GB 7200RPM.
-
I don't like to make my buying decisions solely on synthetic benchmarks like HDTune. -
I mean 99% of users really couldn't care less, right?! -
-
I had two 7k100's in my laptop, and upgraded to two 7k200's and both sets of drives were exceptionally quiet.
A little bit of rubber can really decrease harddrive noise.
You will find people out their who want their systems to be quiet, and others want them loud.
I have a homemade server with 4 Hitachi 15,000rpm ultrastar's and that think clicks like crazy when I stress it. It sounds so amazing. The clicking is music to my ears
I have to say the loudest single drive I have ever heard was a 20gb maxtor 7200rpm desktop drive. They were made in 1998 I believe, and each drive was louder than my hitachi 15k array. I still have a few of them cause they are so damn loud.
K-TRON -
Weird fetish.
-
I guess its kinda like that with cars too. It is strange... but... I remember seeing a Honda civic on the road last year with a huge exhaust (mod obviously) and it was VERY loud. Why the heck would you put a huge exhaust on a civic out of all cars? lol.
-
I'm no expert on HDD noise, but I did notice my old Maxtor was considerably louder after I removed half the screws that secured it in place. Guess that's why it came with 4 instead of two!
At any rate I'll be keeping an eye on this hard drive and other ones that come out soon...with less than 2 GB free a new hard drive is slightly more tempting than getting rid of entirely unnecessary files. -
Your Honor i'de like to strike the whine or whure statement i made about the 7k320 travelstar hdd off the record. Now that i think about it, the moment that i was commenting on was when i was loading a fresh install of xp onto the mighty 8710p, it's all so clear now lol, what i heard and attributed to the 7k320 was the bluray optical drive spinning at 50,000g's ontop of my laptop cooler at high setting not to mention the internal fan ramping up with a whisper of a 7k320 in the background. So you see it's a simple mistake that anyone can make lol. My appologies to the court..........Seriously though i've had my laptop cooler off all day to listen for any sound from the 7k320 and didnt here a peep. THE 7K320 KICKS @#$ , I really saw a difference between the 7k200 and the 7k320 when i was combining my vob movie files today, the 7k320 gottem done about twice as fast as the 7k200. and not a sound from the 7k320 all day. I hope i did'nt scare any of ya away from the 7k320, you definately will be missing out. Im sure everyone will see many positive reviews of it soon. also i did do a pcmark05 test but the certificate is in a prc ext. and i cant get it to open if anyone knows how to open it i will post it
-
I've had drives that make noise when they spin up/down, load/unload, seek and even when they spin. Hell, I've got a 7K200 transplanted into this dv9800 now and I guess if I turn off the TV/iPod/work in the middle of the night when there's no outside noise/if the air-conditioning isn't running I can maybe hear it if I'm listening for it (and there's no mice peeing on cotton nearby).
... but what the hell ... I mean, the sound of the keys is louder (which must drive some of you guys fornicatin' insane ...!) -
Doh! Meat, you had me there. You really had me cancel my order. Great.. 320GB Seagate Momentus 7200.3 or Hitachi 7k320.... decisions decisions....

From what meat says, you probably got a faulty one.
OR it could be that it was a common thing for them to vibrate more, etc. Though its had some time and now they've already fixed up their manufacturing processes or have refined them so its no longer an issue. -
INEEDMONEY Homicidal Teddy Bear
I got an email from ZipZoomFly saying they had them in stock at 6am EST this morning and now they're all gone
-
Hey meat, did you have to reformat yours from the place you ordered?
-
LOL, i apologised to the court of public opinion comon people dont hate meat. Yes forte i formatted the drive so there's 298gb on one partition since i have externals to make backups with.
-
kind of off topic..should i expect price of 7k200 drop any time soon?
lowest i can find is buy.com for $130 FS -
There were deals going for $99 for the 200GB 7k200 (after rebates). I don't think you will see drops soon.
-
I would expect that the common price of the 7k200 will drop about another $10 within the next 3-4 months, but dont wait too long, cause the drives will not be manufactured forever, and probably within a 12-18 months, the price of the drive will increase since the availability of them will be very low.
K-TRON -
Yeah, Hitachi is running a 30 dollar rebate that ends sometime next week. If you want a Hitachi drive, buy it now. As for me, I'll stick with the Seagate Momentus.
-
snapped one 200GB 7k200 from OWC for 99 AR..coming on Monday
-
INEEDMONEY Homicidal Teddy Bear
That's also where I got mine from. I'll have mine installed today
-
I ordered a 7k320 from OWC.. but snatched a Seagate Momentus 7200.3 instead. Should arrive...... today!
-
-
The 7k320 was a OEM. The Seagate that I just ordered yesterday is an OEM.
I ordered it from here who had it in stock as of yesterday and is literally the first ones to have it before everyone else. The G at the end indicates its the model with the G-Shock Protection Free Fall Sensor too.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=270997 -
congratz on the purchase forte, I hope you like the drive. Please benchmark the drive and share your result, and if possible run pcmark o5 on the harddrive and post teh results, that way we can see how it performs in real life to other 7200rpm drives.
Thanks, and enjoy your new drive.
Nice avy, it looks like a girl I work with
K-TRON -
So, how many people have it yet? Does it vibrate or is it quiet?
-
I've ordered one, but since I don't have Superhero-style hearing (nor tactile response) I'm afraid my review won't help y'all here much ...
-
-
Well for my Samsung, I heard very very low clicking noises kind of like my desktop, though much lower. Turns out in Bios I had the setting set to Bypass. I just switched it over the Performance mode and it is dead silent and runs as cool as my Samsung. Though if I really really get close to the drive, I can hear very very small microscopic clicking very infrequently as in Im not sure if its even there I might just be imagining things, not sure if its like the Samsung, though it might just be because I was able to hear the Seagate before it was clicking.
-
Do you know, where is the BDE version at stock? It is part no. HTS723232L9SA61. I cannot find it anywhere
-
Damm BDE model! Have anyone it?
-
PS: I'm not convinced that they are actually shipping the BDE version of this drive to any retailer, even through I've asked if they're shipping. Somebody prove me wrong.... -
Please excuse a noob question, but what do you guys mean by OEM?
