    hooking up external monitor to laptop. please help

    im trying to get this monitor to display my laptop screen. i switched the plug that went into my desktop into my laptop and it made that windows sound like it found new hardware but nothing about installing it came up. i turn on the monitor and nothing shows up. what do i haev to do?

    the monitor says no signal on it when i turn it on after its hooked up to laptop...

    There is usually a key sequence that has to be pressed to switch to an external monitor and not all brand of notebook uses the same. Suggest you look at your user manual.

    On my notebook, its FN+F5

    Yes, frenchnew is right there is a sequence of keys that select external monitors. Mine is Fn+f4. If you tell us what kind of notebook it is, we can tell you what the sequence.
