    how can I change hard drive on sony with operating system on partion?

    I have a sony viao and want to swap out the hard drive to a 7200 rpm hard drive,my question is I have to reformat and put the windows xp on the new drive but the operating system is on a partion the machine came this way splitting a 30 gig hard drive with all the info on the d partition. Not even sure if it can be done pripritory how do I get the information on the new hard drive? the old hard drive was made by hitachie- please don't mind my spelling so confused my hard drive is almost full and very slow but still have 15+ gigs on other patition can anyone help me out is this a common problem? :mad:

    You're either going to need an external HD, HD enclosure, or a lot of CDs or DVDs.

    you could get a 2.5" HD enclosure ($13+), put your new drive in it and transfer all the data you want to that drive. then put in the new drive into your laptop and the old drive can go into the enclosure.

    Norton Ghost does a great job of copying partitions...just get an external enclosure for the new drive and you'll be fine!
