in my laptop without buying and then installing to see if it works.
    heres my problem.
Asus touted the g71gx to be capable of up to 12 gigs of ram, and the g71gx-a1 sku of it is being offered (for presale still) from online resellers with the option of up to 12 gigs of ddr2 ram.
I bought the one from best buy which is the scaled down version, but still has should be similar.

Asus' website and manual says 6 gigs is the max, but similarly, my g1 from asus said 2 gigs was the max, but I've been running 4 gigs in it (after asking another owner) for over a year and a half.

is there anything i can do, any software scans or anything taht will tell me the real max ram per slot? (ps, crucials scan told me my g1's max ram was 2 gigs too)

honestly i bought this thing hoping that in a little over a year, i could throw 12 gigs of ddr2 ram in it cheap(er than now), and upgrade the processor.

Well accdording to crucial the max seems to be 6GB; 2GB for each slot (3).

Unfortunately, there is no way to tell. It's really up to the notebook maker to decide what they want to cap it at. Some notebooks are capped at 8GB, others 6GB or even 4GB. If there are 3 slots, and the manufacturer claims it can support 3x4GB sticks, then it should. IMO unless you're doing RAM intensive work, you don't need more than 4GB.

crucial said that about my g1 and it turned out to be false as well.
and for ram intennsive stuff, i do a bunch of photoshop and illustrator work on an external monitor, and sometimes maya (blehh) work. on top of that i just like getting the most out of my purchases :D and if its possible, its not that much money for ddr2 ram anymore.

Well I guess there's only one way to truly know. But I say do at your own risk.

Are you sure that there is no information in the owners manual? I know that actually reading documentation isn't as much fun as asking the world for opinions, but at least you have a change of getting the correct info the first time.

Have you checked on the mfgrs web site for updated manuals and/or service books?
