how close can i put a relatively high powered speaker next to a computer (the speaker is not magnetically shielded)
and do anyone know if a UPS (uninteruptable power supply) is dangerous placed next to a computer (coz of magnetic reason or what not)? how close can i put it next to a computer?

The only thing I would be concerned about is the hard drive, and that shouldn't be too big of an issue as long as it's not an uber-powerful magnet and you don't rub it back and forth over the hard drive. A UPS should not be an issue. It's basically a huge bank of batteries.

Either one can be placed close to your computer.
The UPS will have a bigger but still negligible effect on unshielded data transfer cables. The UPS will be warm though, it may raise your computer temperatures by a couple of degrees, if that (gasp). -
thanks guys, if anyone else still want to drop a comment i'll still be watching.
i don't think temperature is a problem. i was afraid of the magnetic interference. -
hey apparently after doing some research; a line-interactive UPS actually have a magnetic field, caused by a magnetic transformer?.. my one is rated at 1200va so i'm guessing the magnetic field is quite high.. anyone know how bad?

if you have your computer on your desk and the ups on the floor to the left or right of the desk you're fine. i used to have setup like that for years and years, i dont know how big my ups is compared to yours, but i think i can get like 15min or so before i need to shut down when the power is out

what about if the speaker is near the monitor? will it affect?

magnets near a lcd are not a problem, its crts of the past that have magnet issues. Plus 99.8% of any current speaker you get for computer use is magnetically shielded.
I have my klipsch quintet speakers butted up against my monitor with no problems and they are full fledged home theater speakers not pc speakers. -

thanks guys....great info...that's a relieve.. -
relieve for him but not me
well i guess its a bit of a tough situation i'm in, i put my ups at the desk (because length of cable issue) about 15/20cm next to my computer.
the other one is for my laptop, i hooked mine up next to a beolab 4 speaker, which is not magnetically shielded. the laptop is around 5/10 cm next to it. -

your laptop will have a lcd tho. lcds are not affected by magnetic fields. Only projection tube sets are like a old tv or a crt monitor.
Even then if something happened the damage is not permanent, when the magnetic fields goes away everything returns to normal. or there is a tool that can demagnify it instantly. -
Don't forget that on the rack right near the computer itself (within inches to centimeters) is a popular place to put a consumer-sized line interactive UPS in a SOHO/medium sized office server room.
If you're that worried, get longer cables. If you can't, well, then this issue is pretty moot
how close can i put a speaker next to a computer?
