Shut the lid? You can change what the laptop does when you shut the lid in Power Options under the Advanced tab.

    (Under Classic Control Panel View)
Start -> Control Panel -> Power Options -> Advanced Tab ->

"When I close the lid of my portable computer:"
    Change to Do Nothing.

I believe when it is set like this, the graphics drivers take over and will shut the monitor off for you.

It has nothing to do with the graphics drivers, there's actually a tiny little button that when the lid is in one position gets depressed (it varies for open/closed) and tells the monitor to stay on or go off. It's a hardware thing -- if they lid is closed, the screen is off.

you can use the attached file. it's a .exe. (it's perfectly safe, i use it on my notebook)

just wiggle mouse or hit a key to bring it back.

i have it set up as a shortcut on my quicklaunch bar.

How about using the power option under Monitor power?

In the field Turn off monitor set it to 5 min and the laptop turns the monitors notebookscreen off after 5 min?
