Hey guys, I'm looking for a notebook and I have a PC that's several years old now. I don't have money to upgrade both at the moment, and I was wondering how contemporary mobile GPUs compare to a desktop nvidia 8800 GTX?

    Thanks!

EDIT: just saw the graphics sub-forum. doh.

The majority of mobile GPUs are weaker than the 8800 GTX, but the higher-end ones will beat it slightly - the GTX 280M and GTX 285M offer very similar performance, and the Mobility HD 5850 and 5870 are each a further step up.

Yeah it'd compare to the higher end of single mobile GPUs such as the GTX280/285M and the HD5850/5870.

To give an idea in desktop terms, the mobility HD 5870(arguably one of the strongest single mobile GPUs) compares to a desktop HD5770 roughly.

There is no argument - it's the single strongest mobile GPU, though not by much. However, it's somewhere between the desktop 5750 and 5770, because it has as many shaders as the 5770 but the same core clock speed as the 5750. Indeed, it's closer to the 5750, because the clock speed bump in the 5770 is relatively large.

Well I recall multiple threads arguing its status so I didn't want to be incorrect :p

But yeah, the HD5870M is lesser than the desktop HD5770. Hmm means my 2 year old 4850 still stands the test of time >.>
